... town. I can definitely see how the place would buzz in the winter with its ski fields and cable cars everywhere surrounding not to mention the curative waters of its health spas.

Sue and Keith are still following my journey, they just happened to be on same train carriage and then when we arrived in St Moritz same hotel.

My suspicion is that it's the same scenario as what's happened to the mountain villages of Umbria: at one time people lived off the land here, perhaps herding goats and growing food on small plots of land, but over time the easier life of the cities and plains was too enticing... people moved away and forgot their village and way of life. I ponder this as I continue on up the trail, pausing at ...

... and rougher until in disappears altogether alongside the river... and I find myself heading back to San Giagomo a third time, feeling quite frustrated with myself. And then, when all seemed hopeless, I spot the markings of the trail Splugenpass trail in between the houses... Yep, it's for real this time... I cross an arch stone bridge, pass a couple of other hikers that confirm, yes, this is the right way and then plunge into the forest once ...
