... with each other in case we got separated. Unable to do it by ourselves, Tony was accompanied by the very nice guy from our hotel, on the back of his motorcycle, to a little shop on the other end of town where it might be possible to get a SIM card for foreigners. The selling of SIM cards in India is apparently very strictly regulated due to the risk of mobile phones being used by terrorists to detonate bombs. So Tony had to sign piles of documents over a period of ...

Shaken but not stirred in Udaipur

... without watching Octopussy in one of the nightly venues that show the cheesy Bond movie partly filmed in the city. One can only pity the poor suckers who work in these joints. Having to watch Roger Moore's Carry-On style gurning for an hour was enough for us and we made a 007 like escape.

We did a little research aftera couple of days and located our favorite hotel of the trip so far. The Mahendra Prakesh is a great little place with fantastic ...

... warm morning turns to and unacceptable hot afternoon. Glad that we have our own personal oasis to return to, we arrange to meet Rampal at 7 PM for the trip to the Sajjan Garh monsoon palace on the outskirts of the city. Rampal arrives on time and we head out of town and up the hill to the Sajjan Garh Palace. This palace is built on the top of a hill, more than 1,000 higher than the city. Maharana Sajjan Singh built the ...

... and I have to say that I am much happier coming to hospital in Udaipur this time than last time, since my visit is stress free!! Deepak has arranged for me to visit some really spectacular sights including the Monsoon Palace (see the views in the photos!), and some of the little-visited lakes outside the city, where the bird life is just amazing. You all know me and my birds ...

GET IT INDIA - PART II

... bloody great. Namaste everyone, We've just completed the second week of our induction into Institution India and we must say, we're feeling thoroughly enriched. We've seen and experienced so much it's hard to believe we've been in this crazy country just a fortnight. Our last update came the day after our slumber party in the desert in Jaisalmer and since then we've encountered even more sand and camels - and turbaned men bearing steaming cups of masala ...

... truely is the only way to travel - riding through little villages with kids running after you and waving and the farms that spring out of nowhere, weaving through heards of cows and passing women carrying massive tree trunks on their heads. We stayed in Ranakpur (it was so cold we had to sleep fully clothed) and then drove 60km yesterday to Kumbhalgarh Fort another breathtaking drive to another breathtaking fort, so high up in the ...

... lit the stairs to the "hotel". Unbelievable. The check-in process in India is painful, especially in the dark and cold. There are these huge ledgers that you have to write all of your information in (address, passport number, visa number, etc.) that I am guessing nobody ever looks at again. The same information then has to be copied from the ledger to another pad of paper which will also never be seen. Love the efficiency and attempt at ...
