        ... Ram’s wife away to Lanka. Another looked like Marc Bolan which was ironic as having seen lots of religious artwork out here I now know where he got the ‘ride a white swan’ idea. We left after a few of these scenes were played out on stage, the last one seemingly showing the comic relief character thinking that Lord Ram’s wife had actually fallen for him which triggered much laughter and falling about in the audience.

        ... the lake whist we sipped chai and had an early breakfast in an Indian equivalent of a greasy spoon. The buildings rise up on the forested hills around the lake and the town’s resort image is completed by pedaloes and pleasure boats moored up at various jetties at the lake edge. I even spotted a mini golf course!

        ... I spent a couple more days in Kasar Devi, even though there was nothing to do except take in the surroundings and chat with the locals, I could have easily stayed longer. It was the kind of place well suited to doing absolutely nothing and not feeling guilty about it. However, the idea that I would have to go back to England at some point began shifting forward from the back of my mind and I didn't want to get too comfortable anywhere. There was still a lot of places I wanted to see. Time to crack ...

        ... favourite bits and discussing what we'd like to do if we returned. Back to the northern end of the lake we jumped in a lovely swan pedalo and for Rp150 each took our majestic craft out for a jaunt on the lake for an hour. It sort of reminded us of hiring pedalos at Peasholm Park back in Scarborough and we thought it would be a more peaceful way to enjoy the lake – nope – the lake is very busy with brightly coloured gondola type boats punting folk about ...
