Muckross Road Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, No po, 64-34222
We began our day with sunshine (finally) and a walking tour of Waterford with a tour guide with a thick Irish accent and a bit o' the Blarney in his script, but it was fun. The sad thing is, we were given this tour as a substitution for a tour of the Waterford crystal factory because it has gone belly up due to the economy. Yes, folks, Waterford crystal is no longer being made. In fact the factory has been purchased by a group that has even come in and destroyed the equipment so that it canno...
Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland chorsmanI forgot to tell you yesterday about our jaunting car ride--or as us folks from Illinois would call it--a ride in horse drawn buckboard! When we first arrived yesterday, this jaunting car ride was on the agenda. It was a pleasant ride around town and through a beautiful park and by an old castle. Saw wild flowers growing, swans swimming in the lake, and learned a bit of history about the town. Amazingly, we also learned that one of our favorite movies, Ryan's Daughter, was filmed in this town...
Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland chorsmanWoke up to a beautiful scene of fog over the river that we could see from our window. We decided that we couldn't stay at a famous golf course and not play golf. on the grounds of Mount Juliet It was fun, although the wind definitely affected our game. Went to watch glass blowing at Jerpoint and bought some glasses. Jerpoint Glass is a small family-run glassblowing studio in the Southeast of Ireland. Drove into Thomastown, stopped by the ???? Castle and took some pictures, didn't go into it. ...
Killarney, Ireland jest491Andre: This will only be a quick update, and I will be back to edit it soon. Just wanted everyone to know we stopped in Killarney for 2 quick nights, but the full day we spent there was probably one of the best days of all of our lives. We rented bikes and took a 6 hour ride around this amazing bike trail, stopped at an amazingly beautiful and inspiring abbey and rode along a lake. An amazing day with some great pics to be uploaded soon. Amanda: Andre just showed me how to log in and add stuf...

... open. We drove across the bridge to Valentia Island, which is the home of the Skellig Experience. The Skelligs are a group of islands off the coast of Kerry. The main one is Skellig Michael, which is the site of a sixth century monastic settlement complete with beehive huts. Before we came here, I wanted to go to Skellig Michael and climb to the top, but we would have had to be here before they close for the winter on September 30, and the crossings in an ...
Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland rovingwerners... Pass. I took a picture of MacCarthy’s Bar which is on the cover of a book by the same name before we left town.
By the time we reached the turn-off for Healy Pass, the rain was gone, and the sun had come out. We climbed, this time from south to north, saving the best part of the pass for last. On the way down, we passed a small waterfall that had been insignificant yesterday, but the recent rains had made it a somewhat worthwhile stop.

We again stopped at the seal rocks, which were beginning to disappear with the incoming tide, then returned to the mainland.
We then drove to the Glengarriff National Park and Oak Forest. They have a waterfall walk, so we took it. The waterfall wasn’t huge, but it was a nice walk through the forest before we headed for Kenmare.
On the way to Kenmare we passed the Lorge Chocolatier, out in virtually the middle of nowhere. We stopped in ...

A complex of churches in this area. The ruined cathedral is from the 12th century. Two churches are in the graveyard - one is the Teampall na Griffin from the carving of the Griffin. (Couldn't see it due to maintenance, but got a photo from the exhibition).
A short walk away was another ruined friary.
... bog community area. Poor Pat had just sat down to drink her tea when we rushed her out because we thought the group was leaving - no tea for Pat.
The next stop was for lunch and picture taking. Lunch was an odd experience. All of us descended on this pub at the same time, and a lady wearing two different plaids sat down at our table to eat - sort of family style since there was not enough room. Both she and Pat ordered the ...
