    Visiting Mont Saint Michel

... here. The abbey closes as 7pm but it seems the buses continue to drop people off and pick them up again, until dark. After about 9pm, it seems the day trippers have left. Mind you, there seem to be a lot of hotels in the island so there are still plenty of people around. We head back to the hotel for a slightly earlier night than we've had since starting the bike ride as we're both a little tired from that week. More exploring to be done ...

I'm writing this from Mont St Michel on Saturday. Our final riding day was yesterday and the weather gods really turned it on; it was a lovely day. Cool and breezy in the morning and warmed up quite a bit in the afternoon. The riding was the shortest trip of the week, 46kms with only gentle hills, lots of downhill and flat. We all left the farm early and drove 2 1/5 hours to the coast of Normandy and Brittany to the abbey of Mont St-Michel. For more than a thousand years, the distant silhouette of ths island abbey sent pilgim's spirits soaring.  Mont St-Michel is among the top four pilgrimage sites for Christians through the ages.  It floats like a mirage on the horizon.  It is surrounded by a vast mudflat and connected to the mainland by a half-mile causeway. Mont ...

... enjoyed a lovely afternoon playing on the beach. However the highlight was a scrumptous afternoon tea of banana splits and chocolate crepes. Yum!

A fantastic time was had on the beach building sandcastles and then trying to race the fast flowing incoming tide as well as watching the crazy French kids going for a dip in the very cold ocean. Well, it was cold for us but as we are in the middle of summer it was obviously not ...

    What a day

... rewarded by being taken to a small garden with fantastic views out over the bay and we had fun watching tourists trying to walk through the mud and sand that was exposed due to the low tide. We were not the only ones searching for the cache as we came across a German couple from Hamburg in their 60s, who were climbing over the rocks looking for the same cache. Nathan got chatting with them about our trip and how we will ...
