This tradition I'm told is of Spanish origin, not Indian (different from the danza de los diablitos in Boruca.) I'm able to get a bit more background on this online--but my understanding of it is still limited. Here's what I ...

Day 007 7 hrs, 4.8 kms Day totals: 16 hrs, 10.9 kms In Chitre I plan to do just another quick tour and plaza Parkbench concert, then continue on my way. But in the plaza a European looking girl approaches me and asks in English if I'm looking for a hostel. "There's one close to here that's just ten dollars" she helpfully tells me. Yeah... ... side...
        1) No sheets, toilet paper, tissues, or pillow were provided -- that's on YOU to bring
        2) No hot water, A/C, or fan -- Jaman brought me a fan (saved me big time)
        3) No one spoke English (not so negative for me but anyone that didn't communicate the language would be lost)

        On the positive side....
        1) single room with private bathroom and shower
        2) 3 (liquid) meals a day
        3) great care and a full staff
        and lastly ...
