... ed to Laguna Dudu, an unfortunately named but really magical spot. It's a natural pool set at the bottom of 30-40 foot cliffs, with vines and plants hanging down the cliff walls all the way to the water. We were again impressed with the level of investment in tourism infrastructure. One side of the pool has a concrete platform with a ladder going down to the water, and there are several rope swings. When we arrived there were about a dozen locals ...
Río San Juan, María Trinidad Sánchez, Dominican Republic jesshiggins... can afford. As soon as you walk into the reception area, you get a grand view of the ocean, with tables set on a patio in the open air. The terrace below literally juts out over the water, and the waves (tiny as they are) break against the building. A broad outdoor spiral staircase leads to three levels, all with wide balconies facing the water. The hotel has seen some wear and tear, but it's truly beautiful ...

El Parque Nacional Con Haitses, Samaná, Dominican Republic carlosjeremyHello Friends! April has arrived and the world is heating up a lot! Cinderella, my 9 month old puppy, and I are doing alright although she did eat something terribly toxic this week. We gave her a round of antibiotics and I believe she is on the up and up now. Semana Santa begins tomorrow and the beaches in Samana will be very crowded. I hope to stay away from all the people. This week ...
Samana, Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbird... tons of Italian & French restaurants and boutiques. And every menu is in: Spanish, French, Italian and English. Thankfully, the skies started to clear some on Saturday morning for our drive to Samaná to go whale-watching. I totally felt the favor of God over us that whole day. The taxi was way more than we expected to pay, but it was so worth it because our driver, Eddy, was really cool and ...
Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic aprilreneeOctober 26, 2008 Hey Gang, After a rough first six months in my site, things are finally coming around. Adjusting and adapting to my new surroundings has been all consuming. Please forgive me for not writing more frequently or keeping up with you. I also hope that you continue to stay in touch with me and remember to keep me updated on your life. I have learned that time is precious, passes much too quickly, and, it is hard to ...
Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbird... m here to work and there are plenty of places to head to if I'm need of getting out of the community-first and foremost, the pueblo of Samaná. Samaná is a touristy kind of town with a great Malécon, expensive hotels and a few of those international type restaurants more common in larger cities such as Chinese, Italian, French, and of course, seafood cuisine. I'm finding both Samaná the pueblo Samaná the peninsula to be the kind of place that can ...
Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbird... that note, let me back track and fill you in on how I ended up there... Thursday the 8th around 7:30pm I got really queasy (during a Catholic mass no less, praising the conception date of the Virgin Mary) and about an hour later, after church, it was coming out both ends...simultaneously!! Oh, it was awful. And let me remind you that our toilets don't flush on account of the lack of running water, so what you put in there just sits there until someone hauls a 5 gallon bucket into ...
Cacique, Dominican Republic bradleyhaasHello, I am doing ok. I am in the capital once again because my fungal infection has decided to come back or maybe it never went away. It is a pain, plus I have to get some blood test done in the morning. Either way I get to spend a night in the capital. I love my community, but sometimes you need to get out and see other volunteers or just have a descent conversation. You can only talk about the weather and yucca for so long. My birthday went well. Nothing too exciting. I just had ...
Los Coquitos, Dominican Republic wylycm... all over our room catching the water coming through the roof. To this day I think this was very romantic, but my husband didn't share this view. So much for the hotel, but there's much more to see in the Dominican Republic than what's on the hotel grounds. So let's move on to "Los Haiteses", where trees grow in the middle of the ocean. Make sure you check out the other pictures in the photo gallery!
