      Not so glamorous Bergamo

Well from the outside of city there is a breathtaking view of the upper town but once you are in it I woudn't say the same. Still there is plenty to see wandering around the streets and lots of lovely churches to explore. But it's definitely not the best medieval town in Italy.

... On the way, we stopped and got some strawberry chocolate fondue because it was the Chocolate Festival that weekend in Bergamo. We took a little trolley up the side of the mountain (think the Pittsburgh Incline if you have been there). We walked the winding cobblestone streets until we found the main plaza. We went up into the Campanone (a bell tower), which overlooked the upper city and lower city along with ...

      Desanzano & Sirmione

      Without such a rush
today and the weather being a bit wet, we walked back to the ferry
jetty to catch a boat to Desanzano to the west and on the southern
shore. This was another larger town with a marina again. The
weather just was not inviting today and put a dampener on our walk
around the town. We enjoyed a coffee in a pedestrianised street but
decided not to wait for a later ferry but to return to Sirmione on

      ... scenery
passing by, steep sided rocky tree covered hills as the lake tapered
even more. Half an hour later, we arrived at our final port – Riva
del Garda. This town was substantially bigger but only marginally
less pretty as a result. It was the first that we had visited with a
proper marina, full of sizeable yachts. The water was freezing,
being fed from a tributary lake higher up in the mountains to the
west. Having seen as much as we wished, we sat near ...

      ... turned out
to be the son of the owner. As our meal concluded, he brought out
two glasses of Mirto. To his surprise, we told we knew what were
being offered and our appreciation of it. He promptly withdrew the
glasses and disappeared. A few minutes later, he returned with
another offering, this time home made by one of their chefs. It was
clearer, lighter in colour but wonderfully smooth and tasty. It
      capped a lovely evening out.
