We have just got home after 8 hours walking around the sights of Albi. It has the world's largest brick cathedral, St Cecile Cathedral, and from the outside it is almost ugly. As Garth said, it is like a gigantic pile of red bricks! But inside is a different story. It has a 'choir' with choir screens covered in statues of saints and disciples, and just about every bit of wall and the ceilings are covered in paintings. Near the altar is a huge ...

... heaven. The frescos are original but look fresh and new. I’ve never seen anything so ornate that doesn’t rely on gold leaf. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and really very unique. The altar is at the west end – unheard of in a catholic church but done to save the stone screen. It certainly reinforces the power of the church so I suppose it succeeded in its purpose. ...

Lovely coffee stop in Lescure, sitting by one of the 11th Century town gates with its 19th Century clock. On to Franciscan priory and 12th Century shrine, Notre-Dame de la Dreche.
