We are now booked to stay at Ulisse Deluxe Hostel for one week... is "deluxe hostel" an oxymoron?
Looking for some tips for what to do here... Capri? Amalfi? Positano? Anyone been and have firsthand knowledge?
I am so far behind with this blog. Partly, it's because we have traveled every single month during 2009. There's so much to tell & show that unless I write every week, I'm always several trips behind. The other problem is ...

Naples is not a nice city, but it's a cool city. Venice, Florence, Verona are all nice, but once you've seen the sights, there isn't much else to them.
Walking around the Spaccanapoli district saw some really cool stalls and shops - some that looked like they had been there for ages and not changed much at all. Old school book stores with books piled high and seemingly without any order or system, a stretch on San Sebastiano that ...
Stayed in a small town south of Naples (Vico Enquense) which was right on the water (in a rather remote cove). We rented an apartment for the week which was part of a hotel complex. At the beginning of our trip, we met Tony (from Jersey City) who was from Vico and told us where to get the best pizza and his wife was from Sorrento (which is just south of Vico) so we had some ...
Naples, Campania, Italy pathenger... park a smart car. And nobody got parking tickets.
Our first bus tour, on the red bus, began at the Castel Nuovo and headed north to the Museo de Campodimonte passing the Fontana in via Medina, Convitto Nationale (National School in Naples), Basilica de Santa Maria della Sanita and the Church of Madre del Buon Consiglio along the way.
Returning to the bus terminal, we ...
... plants growing in the garden in 79 AD. Once that is done, the team will do a careful excavation of the garden soil to map the root channels of the plants. With some high precision mapping of those findings, they hope to be able to generate enough data to get a planting plan for the garden of a Roman villa. Before the digging begins, researchers from the University of Birmingham (UK) will come to do some very high resolution mapping of the garden surface ...
Castellammare Di Stabia, Campania, Italy robcoyleI've seen it on the History Channel, heard the great story of the eruption of Vesuvius, but today was my chance to see it for real - the ancient city of Pompeii. I managed to get myself out of bed early enough to catch an 0830 Intercity train down to Naples. For better or for worse, all trains of grade Intercity and above require reservations. For me, this meant a charge of 5 Euros to have a seat on the tw-hour trip down. Yeah, I could ...
