Since Oktoberfest I've minced my way south through Germany over a couple of days, passed through Switzerland and I arrived in Chamonix yesterday. The views in Chamonix are terrible, just mountains everywhere.

... After the obligatory Clair's and cream and double espresso, we said goodbye to Claude and headed to Vevey, a lovely coastal town with a strong artistic heritage. The walk along the promenade and back through the town took 90 minutes and was a pure joy. Only sunshine and warm weather has followed us all the way through Europe so far, and these towns come to life in this climate. Our day trip to Gruyere gave us our country side and small rural village experience in Switzerland. Beautiful rolling hills of green pastures and wooded forests lead to Gruyere, the town famous for that cheese. The old town (for tourists) is a single quaint street with restaurants, hotels, and craft shops. After a coffee and short walk, we had lunch at Le Chalet de Gruyeres, famous for its fondue. I slept really well last night and did not want to get up this morning. I did finally drag myself out of bed and got to Savoy in time to have breakfast with Ken and Cheryl.
