Today I headed off North to Nagano on a morning bullet train from Tokyo. I will be using Nagano as a base for visiting other locations over my 2 day stay here due to its ease of commuting back to Tokyo. My plan for this first day was to arrive in Nagano, drop my bags off at the station luggage lockers and then head on a bus out to Jigokudani wild snow monkey park. This all went to plan thanks to the helpful people in the information ...

... 2.04pm Shinkansen back to Nagano. We then took an old fashion bus to Zonkoji Temple. Owen left soon after and we were left to fend for ourselves. It was an easy 1.7Km walk downhill back to the hotel, supposedly.

We went around the gardens first and that took quite a while as it was quite large. The hordes of Japanese or more than likely, Chinese tourists, had already left by that stage and we could ...

... then another cable car to Kurobe Dam.

It was freezing at the dam, even colder than at the peak at Murodo. The dam had an elevation of only 1450m but the wind was freezing. It was a great view of the dam but did not have enough time to go right to the top.

Unfortunately, the restaurant at the top closed at 3pm and it was well past that by the time we arrived. We had to buy some lunch at the counter in ...

... br> Heavy dinner again with even more food than the previous night. Unbelievable food. The rice had been harvested only a few days ago. I have not tasted rice this good before. Needless to say, I couldn't eat the sashimi and couldn't offload it to anyone else. i did boil one piece of tuna in the soup and it tasted OK.

The big boss of the ryokan, usually a woman, came out to thank us for staying. I guess she ...

... cold on the return trip in the open carriages but worth the views.

When we returned to the station, Owen was waiting for us with the bus. We had enough time for a quick shower and dressed in the traditional formal yukatas for dinner. Dinner was a sampling of different food types. I had to disgrace myself in the eyes of the Japanese by cooking my sashimi. I don't do raw fish, tuna or prawns. We had wagyu beef that we had ...
