The Medieval City

... We went to Casino (no mom it wasn't actually a Casino it was the name of the grocery store) and bought some things for dinner including a bottle of wine.
In the morning we woke up and got all packed and ready to go. The staff at the hotel were super nice and let us leave our bags with them so we could go to the medeival city for the morning before heading back into town. So we headed back to the city and this time took a horse drawn wagon ride around ...

The Pull of the Pyrenees

Leaving Las Laous today was *************e was soo sad that even the mountains were crying. Grey cloud filled the valley and the moisture poured from the sky.

At the end of the lane was our road towards Foix announcing the rise to the Col de Peguere. Not as well known as the Col de Port, but much higher. We would leave 947m and rise to 1375m in a mere 3.5km. That means that for every 10m we rode forward, we would be ...

... walls, there are shops, restaurants, and hotels. Everything still functions as a city, except the castle. We wandered around for a little over an hour. We tried the infamous chocolate olives. Fran had spent some time here and she told us to try them. I thought it looked and tasted like an almond M & M. We had crepes with Nutella and grabbed a pannini on the way out.
Spectacular Castle

... She married a fisherman 50 years ago and moved to France. We talk a few minutes as she rests (it is at the top of hill on a hot morning). She leaves, satisified that I can speak Spanish, and says “goodbye handsome” in Spanish.

I love the pastries in France. On the way to the bus, I pick up croissants of chocolate and of apples. Yum! The bus is only E1 anywhere within the vicinity of the main town Perpignan. A train would be closer to E5. No baggage service ...

... the need to shout everything?), the traffic, the restaurants. Gosh was on track for a panic attack. I've escaped and am nestled away in an internet cafe, before heading for dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant (change is as good as a rest), before heading back to the campsite to blowup my bed and turn in for the night. I'm planning on getting up very early in the morning to enjoy the citadel to myself ...

Carcassonne, Day 1

... I had written down: cross the bridge, trun left, go two blocks (along a pretty canal) and there was my hotel. Viola! Even though I made my plans with care, it still always surprises me when they actually work, and I end up right where I intended. I met Dominique, the hotel owner, who speaks almost only French but is very patient and accomodating. Carcassonne is divided into two parts: La Cîte, which ...

... Never have the spring-based rocking horsies bent so much! By now the day's heat had set in, and we were grateful for the water that Monique had packed for us. We continued our walk outside the walls of the Cité, heading for the business district. Maxime led us to the pedestrian streets full of shops, the post office , and banks. Again, we split up for some shopping time. The kids were very good about being prompt for meeting times, and about not wandering alone.

... prison cell. One last footnote, one of the last Albigensian fortresses to hold out against the Catholics was the castle of Montségur in the Pyrenees not far from here. It was besieged for nearly a year in 1243 and 1244 before it finally fell. 200 Cathars were burned alive at the stake. The story is that several leaders of the sect managed to escape over the wall the night before the castle fell. They took with them, the story goes, the "treasure of ...

... parking spot and while we unloaded our luggage a girl with a clipboard filled in her paperwork and took the keys and my signature off me. We bought cups of coffee at the buffet while we waited for our train and also purchased paninis to eat on the way. Anne used the wait to make a phone call to P&D in Scotland. When the time approached we carried the cases down stairs, along a tunnel and up stairs (ds,at,us) to the required platform. Anne's injured ...
