The road to the Asfeld Bridge, built to allow communication between the Old Town and the Fort on the top of the next hill, is gravelled and steep. But we made it! It spans the Durance river gorge with a single arch nearly 60 metres high and is still considered an amazing feat of engineering.

This trip is surely character building!

I come back - Ainslie repeats seemed to have helped Stacie (she had completed 365 for the year before we left), as well as practice riding some knarly downhill stuff.So tomorrow we will be able to take a very big shortcut when we climb over Cime de la Bonette to Auron (50kms) as opposed to (143kms) for the riders. Stage 4 - Serre Chevalier to Pra Loup

After a great night's sleep aided by a more luxurious start time of 8am, we awoke to cool, fine conditions - perfect cycling weather. Forecast was 8-10C at the start and the top of climbs, and 17-20C in the valleys. This is why I ride - the agony and the ecstasy are both exquisite and indescribable! My cycling buddies understand. And with that done, I think I can actually do this thing!

James had a gorgeous day, starting out with L'Isersan where he captured some great video. Then Karen (the GPS lady) took him and the kids over Col du Telegraphe and Col du Galibier. Very scenic ...
