... place that commemorates the taking back of Spain from the Moors by the Christians in the late 700s. Apparently, this Pelayo dude (very scary smelly mountain man-looking from the paintings around) decided enough was enough. [Guess the Moors were permitting too much education, freedom, civilization, art, science and the like.) So here we stand in the heart of all that made the way for throwing out of ...
Covadonga, Asturias, Spain and Canary Islands sinfronteras... it was closed to the public, so we only looked at it from the outside and took a picture of the plaque.
Then, we made our way to Bar Aviles to meet Hector. The guys had a beer and we all chatted. Then our evening of bar hopping began. We went to another place and then eventually made our way to Corazon del Diamante, a bar where Hector's girlfriend works. Apparently ...
... the mountains following the river Cares. Although it is only possible to see the river occasional due to it being too far below the path it is possible to hear it. The walk is about 24 kilometers there and back. Approx 16 miles. We have never been on such a spectacular walk. The path clings to the cliff face hundreds of meters above the gorge and burrows through solid rock. It is very difficult to describe adequately.
Tomorrow 2 10 09 we move on.

Oviedo, Asturias, Spain and Canary Islands mispasosleti... Being a Sunday night it was quite dead, reminding me a lot of a night spent in Tenerife (see blog entry entitled "Sleeping with ghosts" http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-en tries/pwong/canaries-2007/1199704560/tp od.html)
Aimless wandering can be so liberating ... you don't always seem to know where you are going, or how you'll get there, but somehow you end up where you want, and more importantly, need to be.

Oviedo, Asturias, Spain and Canary Islands antoniusestrill... us in Leon tomorrow, so the chance of bumping into them here in Gijon, in an Internet Cafe, was a total fluke! We had a quick catch-up visit, updated our travel blogs, checked our e-mail and said our goodbyes. Jim and I had our latest dinner yet - 10:20 pm! We had "doner kebaps", which were delicious. Jim struck up a conversation with the cook, who is from Bangladesh, while I dashed across the street to take a picture of the skyline at dusk. Adios!
Gijón, Asturias, Spain lindalequesne... that night. I wasn't sure if it was from too many boquerones, my favourite tapa, or the brass band next door that broke into jubilant renditions of Basque tunes every ten minutes. They played until 2am and then the next day accompanied Napoleonic-era cavalry and soldiers through the Parte Vieja streets. The soldiers stopped and fired their muskets and then the band stuck up a rousing marching tune. "Is this a typical weekend ...
