Tomorrow is our first rest day on the Camino which means we were very keen to get to Leon as soon as possible. The phantom horizon and the corner just ahead both fool you into thinking you are going to crest this hill soon. Like a mirage they provide false hope and disappointment. Your jaw drops and unkind words are uttered as you look at ...

Leon ... Not what we expected

... walking pilgrims who were in various conditions. Many were limping or walking with a bit of a gentleness to one side. One man had a prosthetic leg. Most have a knee bandage or leg support of some kind. Some walk with one walking stick, many have two. The rhythm of the sticks helps to create almost a chant-like tap-tap-tap that we hear ahead, and behind us.

We had great speed this morning and by early afternoon had reached Leon (54kms). ...
