... in spring it must be magnificent with the cherry trees that line the stream all in blossom. Our favourite was Honen-in, a beautiful secluded temple with a thatched gate & raised zen garden designs with a history dating back to 1192 and an interesting cemetery. The ceiling of the current temple was built using floorboards from Fushimi castle after a historical battle in 1692 and the bloodstains are still evident. ... If this had been a daytime flight where we were awake to make use of the entertainment, complimentary meals and drinks, and better service, I'd have paid for business class without hesitation, but I couldn't justify the extra $800 just for a nicer seat to sleep in.

... we had one of the best and most enjoyable meals ever. All prepared by a female buddist monk in front of us in her living room/temple. It was more like a second hand bookshop/ musical instrument store with loads of pictures of cats and cool posters. She had a beautiful cat that at times sat on her shoulder whilst she walked around. Sat at the end of the bar was as a 71 year old monk who, although spoke almost no english, continued to talk and joke with us all night. Later ...
