Which Way to Turn?

... to a better road? Which was going the way we wanted? Who knows! Seems as though you need to be born and raised here to know which way to turn.

We decided to head towards the coast and try following the water. It worked well for us in the Peloponnese, so it might work here…

Went through a cute little town and saw a sign for a campground! But the further we cycles away the more ...

Where can you get to customs ad not have enough money to pay for a Visa ad they let you walk into town to go to the bank to get some?

Where do you see shop owners playing backgammon in front of their stores?

Where is tea brought to your tent in the morning on a silver platter?

Where do you hear deafening calls to prayer blasted from nearby minarets?

Where do full sheep carcases hang in ...

Stopover 1: Chios (Hello Europe!)

Destination 396

[Ferry]

According to the fact, that I already have travelled around Eastern Europe at the beginning of this worldtrip, there was little reason - or better said, little money left - to do it again. So it was planed to take one of those many ferrys connecting almost every corner of the european coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Very Nice & Expensive

Alacati, a very pretty little town with one main street, lots of eating places and very expensive hotels. We found a small place tucked away down a back street called Umit Otel after the owner. He was very nice and the place was very clean. You basically walk in through the garden gate into a paved semi covered area which is reception dining and chill-out area in the garden ...

Chios...my heritage

Today we piled into a mini van and took off to explore the island from which my family comes from. Chios is a fairly large island here in Greece and it is located aprox 8 nautical miles from the west coast of Turkey. The island has a rich history of which played a pivotal role in my ancestors life. Chios is the only island in which the Mastique tree produces a hardened resin. Mastique trees in other areas of the island and in other countries produce a soft ...

Chios: It's a Greek Place

... of those vanity shots where I set my camera up then set the timer to allow me to restage my activities. Then I left my tripod strapped to a dead tree branck. So that was the last I saw of it.

Like most of these hikes and climbs I make, this one may appear more intimidating and difficult than it actually was.

Getting Over to Chios

... the Turkish visa was still 15 euros for an American. He said he didn’t know; and with a slight smile said, “I work narcotics.” I laughed and said, “Do you want to check my bags? I only have asprin.” No.

So, the little boat was boarded, after all, in plenty of time before cast-off.

Chilly as the crossing was, I stayed out on deck. A little over half way across a fellow standing next to me (the guy sitting in the lower right of the ...

The Long Trek Home Begins

... 3 to force 6 Tiercel sailed like a demon under gorgeous night skies which evolved into a spectacular orange sunrise over the Turkish coast and then a beautiful morning. The wind died when we were about 2 miles from Mithimna (AKA Molyvos). The reason we were on Lesvos at this time was to meet Rob's cousin Tim who was coming out to sail with us for the week. Two nights before we were due to meet him a 60ft motor cruiser squeezed in beside us. The ...

Old bones, a plastic tide and the queen of Spain

... all hope of courting melanoma. Back to Chios 24km away. Approach the town from the south and you're on a relatively wide one way avenue along the seafront. Approach from the north and you're instantly swallowed by a maze of narrow one way streets clogged with cars, motorcycles and pedestrians with a death wish. After running the gauntlet, we park along the road out of town and walk back in, Bella to browse the shops, me to find an ATM and tap this entry.

We arrive!!

... head off to Volissos our final destination! We needed 2 cars for this trip, since the Greek equivalent of a LARGE CAR is a Hyundai Accent!!! Needless to say, that won't do for a family of 5 with 6 suitcases and 2 carry-on bags!! The kids rode with the taxi driver and Ken and I followed behind, getting a taste of "Greek driving" in the mountains!! Watch our for goats!!
