Gdansk or Danzig (if you are German) Day 2

Had a fine breakfast this morning with mixed vegetables, pancakes, hotdogs, cheese, and a variety of other goodies and good coffee. Was fun. We toured the town and went into several churches. Some of them are beyond belief with beauty. We tried to go into the shipyard where the uprising occurred in the 70"s, but the guard at the gate stopped us and showed us back out. Going to try out a milk bar for dinner tonite and some pierogies. Jill found a link to her Polish ancestry today at the market...

Soporific Sopot

... cold now from being out of the sun. As we get closer to town, we pass a man selling smoked barbequed cheese. It is delicious. What a treat. We thought at first that it was covered in something but it is nothing but the cheese. It is so fresh that it squeaks when we chew it.

Back to the hotel to get our jackets before venturing out for dinner and an evening promenade. What a lovely easy place.

Deliciously Decadent Drink

They bring a spoon along with it so that you can finish it to the bottom of the glass. Yum!

Yesterday we are walking up the square in Sopot, Poland and I notice people sitting in a café with cups of what looks like ...

Internationally Invisible

... just don’t care anymore? Or are we truly sometimes invisible? Is anyone else invisible too? As we get older, do we get more invisible? If this is true, why can’t I be invisible and walk onto airplanes and get free rides? Why can’t I be invisible when I want to be? What does the future look like if we slowly fade away to invisibility and no one sees us at all?

Gdansk Revisited

Back to Gdansk today to see if we can get into some of the museums that we missed yesterday because everything is closing early these days. Tourist season officially must be over but there are still plenty of tourists around the area. We are now almost experts on moving about on the trams so got to the main tourist street quite quickly. The amber museum was still not open. It is housed in ...

Gdansk is gnice

... go for a look. It is really awesome. The crane was run by men walking on the great wheels to turn the cranks and raise the load. We were able to go into the crane as it is also a maritime museum. I wanted hubby to get into the wheels for a photo but when he started to get in, the wheel moved. As we didn’t want to damage anything, he didn’t get it. Drat. I ...

University of Gdansk and Solidarity

Gdansk, Poland

Today we were supposed to dock at Gdansk, Poland but the sea was too rough so we had to go up the coast about 10 miles and dock at Gdynia. At Gdansk, a river empties into the sea and that is where the port is. It had been raining so much that the water coming from the river would not allow us to enter. The entry to the port was very narrow, no place to turn the ship around, and we were going to have to back in anyway. Gdynia was the ...

I'm in food heaven!

... the first Pole to become Pope but also for the things he did and said. He visited Poland as Pope in 1979 and some of the things he said during that visit gave the people hope and may have spurred people on to take action. So as you can tell Gdansk has some interesting history. Another reason I enjoyed Gdansk is because there was a festival happening when I was there. I seems that in quite a few of the places I have been, I have either just missed a festival or it begins a few days ...

Couchsurfing again

... There was one thing that happened at the party that was a little strange and awkward for me. At one point this guy who was talking to a group of people in Polish reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a white, knit kippah with a blue star of David on it. He put it on his head and pretended to daven. I asked the guy I was talking to at the time what was going on. He said that the other guy was telling a joke. I kept prodding, but the joke was never ...
