... places in the world that are this old, and you can just walk around them.

After Knossos, we decided to drive about the island for a bit - with a vague idea of making our way to Agios Nicolas. The scenery is quite spectacular - there are huge mountains, lots of rocks, some parts very arid, some parts very green. The smaller ones in the centre appear to do a good trade but the larger ones around the port area look a bit starved of patronage. Good menus at them all although still sorting what all the Greek names mean (lamb Kleftiko, Beef Stifado, Gemista, Dakos, Shrimps Saganaki). But certainly ...

... sweltering (mid-70s in Istanbul, mid-80s everywhere else) and the 4 hours of rain occurred while driving. The value in Turkey has been great. Lodging ranging from 60€ to 120€ per night for a family of 4 seemed quite reasonable and 2/3rds of the places had a pool! Most sit down meals cost around $10 per person, a doner kabab was usually around $3 and a large beer is about $4. Best location: Cappadocia Best hotel: Sultan Cave Suites Best adventure: Saklikent Gorge ...
