At Erice's peak, the tower and turrets of 12th-century Castello di Venere look over cliffs and the lights of Trapani harbour. A brutal wind keeps us away from the edge. It's quiet in Erice this night, in this weather. I imagine it packed with coach tours on mid-summer days.

... Zingaro National Park is part closed off. The tinder-dry weather and brisk winds raise the chances of forest fire. We can't find transport their today anyway, so we hit the beach again. Most tours to Zingaro go by boat and allow visitors to swim towards the bays rather than hike the trails. It's overcast today, with fewer visitors but just as many hawkers, offering massage, bracelets, sarongs, coconuts and inflatables.

Vito Lo Capo is a fury of sun-worshippers and hawkers.To be able to find a room, we've booked three days here before the invasion of grain lovers that fill all the B&Bs for the town's annual Cous Cous Festival.
