... back to the main Beppu station. It seems the easiest way ( and I use that term loosely) is to get a taxi. Well after showing the taxi driver the map and where we want to go he says 'ahhhhhh Lopeway' so we confidently know we are on the same page. ¥2000 later we are at the Ropeway station and after the staff making sure we understand that we are not going to see much because it's so cloudy, we pay our money and go anyway. Did I mention it has been laining and ...

... ages walk around or soak naked in the onsen. I should also mention that the onsen overlooked the city below as well as the ocean. All but one of the pools was out in the open. Honestly, a good pair of binoculars would give someone an eyeful.

I couldn't take pictures of all the baths because of obvious privacy reasons (most onsen are public and you enter them naked). The pictures of the onsen I took were because they we're private ones or I just ...

Beppu is actually kind of a boring city. I went there for the onsens and it a good location to travel from when going to Kurokawa onsen (see day 18). One of the most famous thing in Beppu are the so called hell onsen. A couple of natural hotsprings, all some kind of different thing to them. It sounded fun so I checked them out. Wow was that dissappointing. The first two ...

Beppu didn't quite live up to my expectations but they were probably too high. I stayed in a Ryokan - traditional Japanese accommodation - and while it was nice it was a bit run down. The meals were huge but of average quality. The Onsen was the highlight, the outdoor pool heated by the thermal activity in the area. I was staying in Kannawa ...
