Just Like being at home

Well woke up to torrential rain and it looked just like the lake district cold and damp we did try and manage to go out for a little while as we needed to get some laundry sorted and stuff but it was just to wet. We managed to get to use the internet and have a drink of really fit hot chocolate it was just chocolate melted down with lots and lots of whipped cream on the top we did not do much this day really as the weather was a wash out I managed to get ...

The Lake District

I was sorry to leave Opatija because the hotel was so lush but move on we had to I was also excited that we where going to another country as we had spent so much time in Croatia. Felt bad that we had not even tried the food or gone out properly but I am still recovering from my fall and needed to rest as much as possible. So we got the bus to Rijeka and by some stroke of luck I asked a woman on the bus where the train ...

Took the pletna, stormed the castle

... 5,285' we climbed out of the car to take pictures and declaim "look! it's as high as our house!" but as we said it in English nobody really much cared. There were plenty of seriously-thighed bicyclists climbing those alps, too, and we were very much impressed. At many points along the way it was a 14% grade, those signs we could read....when I didn't have my eyes closed. This road is called the Russian Road, it was built by Austro-Hungarian POWs during WWI ...

Lake Bled

The last few days have gone by so quickly! Lake Bled in Slovenia was spectacular and definitely lived up to all that we had heard. There was a church called the Church of the Assumption on a little island right in the middle of the lake, and a castle perched high up in the hills. A lot of people had taken gondola rides or were rowing boats themselves across the lake when we arrived right at sunset ...

A (very) close second best...,

... views down into the valley that is (pretty much just) the lake, before coming back down on the cable car. It took us about 10mins to go up the mountain, on the way back down, I think the cable car dude was in a hurry to get home as it we made it to base in less than 5mins!! My heart was in my throat for most the trip, but it was the best 13 euros I've spent on this trip...
... set up back to back).

It is close to sunset as we get to the lake. There is a church on a tiny island in the middle of the lake. Boats take people out there. By the time we get to the lake, boats have pretty much stopped. We grab a bottle of wine and walk to a spot nearby the island to enjoy the sunset.

We find a fun bar. It is packed with people as they play American songs. The drinking age at the bar is 16 so there is a huge range of ages.

Driving through Slovenia

... Alfa Romeo. It is actually a really good car. Nice form and decent engine. Chris does all the driving. We hit the Supermarket for some food and alchohol. We find a fun spot near the border of Slovenia for a picnic. We make an American style sandwich. Lots of meat & cheese (typically 1 layer is used in Europe and we have 6 or more slices), mustard … Delicious!
<br ...

... and helmet and it needed to be set up in advance. I was bummed but happy to have seen them perform. Gabe had a secret up his sleeve though. He had found a place between Lipica and Lake Bled that had Lippazzaner horses and occasionally let people ride them. So as I drove he began secretly navigating us there. When we arrived we found the sweetest ...

Chilling by the lake

... up was not in vain. I walked down to look at supposedly a great waterfall, but it was more of a drizzle because it was the summer! As I came back up, I spotted some signs for Bled, so decided to walk back rather than catch the bus back from the other side of the gorge. Along the way, I met an elderly English couple, who were doing the same walk and had instructions. As it happened, it was very well signposted, but it was nice to talk to someone while I walked! Even though it ...
