... shaped rock/hill with wine cellars carved out of them. Each cellar has a little bar area where people can come in and taste the wine. This would be an unbelievable place for a pub crawl for anyone interested. All the cellars are centred around a park the size of half a football field and there must be around 40 different ones there (plus a few restaurants). Everything is sold by the dl (decilitre = 100ml). A 1 dl ...

... idea of who is producing what. As I was driving, there was no tasting for me, but I did buy some interesting bottles at one of the toprated producers (Sike Tamas).
We drove back to Budapest, parked the car, got two glasses from the hotel and then took a taxi to Dunapark island. While the sun set over Buda, we were enjoying some wonderful Egri Pinot Noir.
... restaurant last night doing their best to drink all the schnapps available, and we heard that since they switched from Korunas to Euros in January their income has multiplied many times. Perhaps it won't take that long!
We're now in Eger in northern Hungary. The town is famous for a Turkish siege in 1596 followed by an occupation, obviously the reason they server excellent kebabs! There is a fortress overlooking ...

Miskolc, Hungary thailonArrived from Budapest at 10.30am after changing trains in Füzesabony. Walked into town which took about 15 minutes and visited the Tourist Information centre for a town map. Started our walking tour of Eger at Eger Cathedral before walking past the Bishop's Palace and then stopping for lunch. After lunch we walked past the Cistercian Church towards the castle. Stopped at The Minaret and the Minorita ...
Eger, Hungary tyga... it.) It was very cute and right on the border of Slovakia. If you crossed the creek on the side of town you were in a new country! For the last week we have had a friend, Amy, staying with us. She is an American (from Seattle) and backpacking for a year. We met her in Belgium and now she happened to be in Hungary while we were here so we met up. She was so much fun to have around and very hilarious! On ...
Miskolc, Hungary gwennifer... which is precisely why we were there. We settled in early to prepare for a vigorous day's wine tasting ahead. After enjoying some rare early morning sunshine, we walked to Szesspany Volgny (Valley of the Beautiful Women), as the local wine centre is known. This is a horseshoe-shaped street consisting of nothing but wine cellars. Most allow free small tastings and all sell very cheap glasses of the local wine (about 50-80c). You can also take your ...
Eger, Hungary andrewmarnie... eens.
