    ... gestures. They shouted us traditional Japanese liquor, Shōchū, which we all shot together (whilst shouting "Kampai!", meaning "Cheers!"). Shōchū tastes a lot stronger than Sake, though I'm not sure of its alcohol content. They were so impressed I enjoyed drinking it they bought me more, and called me "Osakihime", which means "Alcohol Princess" !! I think we made some new friends that night, ...

    ... a viewpoint, so had expected something at least mildly strenuous. What we got was a 10 minute stroll to a tower from which you could just about see the Sea of Japan. On the plus side, there was a small bamboo forest that was considerably quieter than the one in Kyoto, albeit with considerably less bamboo too!     ... we were served an early dinner. Our meals at this ryokan would be served to us in our room. Our waiter, it later transpired, was actually from Germany, but his parentage was Japanese, so he was here to improve his Japanese and English on a work placement. He seemed pleased to have European guests to chat to and for our part, it was really good to have someone we could ask lots of questions about the food.
