... from the town of Urk took to the high seas. Literally. Using the locks at either end of the dyke, they headed out into the North Sea.

The building of the Afslitdijk not only allowed more land to be reclaimed, it also helped to control storm surges by reducing the exposed coastline. Waterlevels within Ijsselmeer can also be reduced by the opening of the barriers at low tide. There is a "bubble shield" within the lock system which prevents the salt water ...

... here. Interesting chronological exhibits following his short 37-year life, his health and psychological problems (he's the guy that cut off his ear), and how it all impacted on his art. I was excited to see my favorite painting of his - "Almond Blossom" (I bought a print at the Gift Shop"), but two of his other most famous works were not there - "Sunflowers" was borrowed to a London museum, and "Starry Night" lives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. ...

... chicken salad with cashews and an avocado dressing - and an espresso ofcourse! Delicious (€10.85).
Lots more walking today. The biking still fascinates me. There's so many of them and they all appear quite calm and as if they have all the time in the world (while they avoid pedestrians and cars). I watched from the hotel window tonight and noticed how few of them have lights and/or reflectors - and not one had reflective clothing! Let's not forget that ...

Wednesday rolled around and with the final drive to Utrecht ahead of us, we left the campsite mid-morning, keen to get there and start packing/celebrating the end of campervan life, in plenty of time. We'd just left the supermarket where we had stopped off to get a couple of bits and pieces to make actual meals out of the few remaining ingredients in the cupboards, when the rattle and clang started. ...
