... my time staying in the area, I must have taken over a hundred pictures of the famous mountain, each more beautiful and interesting than the last.

    Day 1:
The first day was a wash. It took a long time to travel from Okinawa to Narita (airport near Tokyo), from Narita to Shinjuku (a major location in Tokyo), then from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko (via bus). I found the place I was staying (a small little hostel) and asked for a place to ...

... of the local sumo stables. It was fascinating to see these wrestlers, mostly novices, spar in test matches and do drills pushing each other around the ring! Often lean, strong wrestlers would best the heavy ones; we’re hoping to catch a professional match later on to see how different it is! Praying for good weather conditions, we left Kawaguchi by bus to climb Mt Fuji. Arrived at the 5th station around 9pm.
The 5th station is basically the end of the tree-line on the mountain.

... would be an easy way to burn energy since it was a 6 hour round-trip bus ride. I wasn't thinking when I let him wear his favorite shoes. He walks a lot in his Crocs, but the holes kept getting rocks in them. There was also so much dirt. The 2 year old couldn't resist stopping to play in it. Mike was getting impatient, so in the pack Will went. Somehow we then veered off the trail and wound up on the construction road. This thrilled Will, but confused us when we got to a ...

Left our capsule hostel at 6am to get a direct bus to the start of our trail, Yoshida 5th Station (about 2.5 hours south west of Tokyo. Started hiking at 10am Surprised at how much 'climbing' was required rather than hiking. This is definitely not a trek you just decide to do there and then. Made it to our mountain hut for the night called Fujisan hotel before any other guests arrived. The temperature was much colder than what we've been used to. Bunk beds in the mountain hut were like ...
