The Pink City

Jaipur was really just a stop off for us in order to see whatever sights there were and also to avoid a full day of travelling to visit Agra. So after a three hour bus journey from Pushkar we arrived and checked into a very nice room in Karni Niwas, the bathroom even had a bath tub - duly used by the lady. The city itself is really just a modern city which happens to have some old buildings in it. Even though the old city is effectively preserved within the old city walls its doesn't feel lik...

16th April 2005 Bangkok to Mumbai Nice easy morning and departure from Bangkok. Fantastic electrical storm whilst in the taxi to the airport. As we sped along the raised highway lightening struck the city on either side of us all the way there. Had a KFC at the airport which proved to be a mistake as Mick was very poorly. Arrived in Mumbai after a decent but slightly disappointing flight on Cathay Pacific. Mumbai has the most decrepit airport imaginable. The toilets were disgusting! Got a tax...

First of all, I must confess: I'm home now as I write this. In fact, I stayed just a week in India: four days in the Himalayas, two in Jaipur, and one traveling between the two. You might think that with only two days in Jaipur, I wouldn't have so much to say. Quite the contrary! This turned out to be the funniest part of my trip -- perhaps because, as a guest of my friend Chintu, I had the best access to the local culture. Funny incident #1: While I intended to spend most of my time in Jaipu...

We took the overnight train from Jaisalmer to Jaipur on Monday night. Arrived in Jaipur at 5am and after the usual hassle at the train station we got a tuk tuk to the hotel we wanted to stay in. Room was ok and cost just over E10 a night. We slept til around 10am then went for breakfast in McDonalds! We noticed the city was quite dirty and the people were as bad with the staring as in Mount Abu. It was too hot again during the day to do much so we just went to the train station and booked our...

Jaipur, the famous pink City

The pink city of Jaipur is steeped in Rajasthani history and tradition, forts, palaces, monuments, and old buildings speckled all across Jaipur, speak of its rich cultural heritage. The city was conceived and designed in 1727 AD by the Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh and was later named after him.
The city looks almost magical at sunset when the sunrays paint different hues of pink on the walls. It was painted a `welcoming pink` during the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1876.
We stayed at...

The Pink City ain't so rosy

Jaipur is not my favorite Indian city. In fact I would say it is my least favorite Indian city.
After a very long train ride we arrived and were immediately picked up by our super friendly
guest house owner.

Right away a beggar woman with her small child in a sling in front of her came up to the jeep for food. I gave her some nuts I had left from the train ride. I watched her and she gently fed them to her son lovingly.
You don't see tenderness very often here.

Pink City

... Singh collects us for a visit to a gem factory. Alas, the gem factory tour consists of a 2 minute viewing of some old wooden contraption outside used for cleaning and cutting gems. We're then ushered inside the sparkling shop and carefully prodded into buying any one of the exotic jewelery items on display. We're asked if we want drinks. Tea, coffee, coke, water, whatever we want. It's all part of the service. Dara takes a coffee and I decline. I'm not having this loon buy my ...

... almost intact, containing palaces, gardens open and covered reservoirs, a granary, an armoury, a well-planned cannon foundry, several temples, a tall tower and a giant mounted cannon-the Jain Ban, the largest cannon in the world." It took us sometime to find the big cannon, which was big, but the carriage the cannon was on was even bigger. I just wonder how effective something that big would be during war. We ...

After the Taj debacle I had another day in Delhi to recuperate for my next adventure to Jaipur, a mere 200kms south-west of Delhi. Jo had decided to join me for the weekend, and we booked the 6pm train to Jaipur from Delhi CNTT station, the closest station to Jo's work. We had booked the second best class, 2AC, and reasonably assumed that this would be towards the front of the train. How wrong we were. The train did not stop for long at the CNNT station and ...
