We met the taxi driver the next morning, and despite one of them saying the road over the mountain pass would be closed due to snow from the day before, the other taxi driver insisted it wasn't. So off we went and about 2 hours outside of Fes there we were in a few feet of snow in the Swiss-like-town of Ifrane, with a snow barrier closing off the route. We sat there for a while with some other cars trying to get through but the guards said we'd have to take a longer road around. About 10 ho...

We had anoth** picnic lunch at a nomad tent ov** the Ziz valley. It was a riv** of lush green surrounded by dry, rocky cliffs. Ate v**y well. And I do enjoy the long drives, spending time just staring out the window and listening to music. It gives me a lot of time to think, and just soak up the landscape.

Driving to our aub**ge in the M**zouga area was a little trying. Th**e wasn't really a road, as such. It was v**y bumpy. It was kinda funny to ...
Merzouga, Morocco abulia... part. We had to stop once for camels crossing the road outside of Merzouga. Then, we got stopped by the cops for "speeding". How could they tell with no radar detectors? I guess we just looked like we were moving too fast. Our poor driver had to get out and talk to the cops - Hamsa stayed in the passenger seat and explained we were going 62 in a 60 kilometer/hour zone. The cop just wanted money. Our driver refused to ...
Merzouga, Morocco cleo2471... was basically some nomad style tents with rugs on the floor. The tents are made from brown goat hair woven into blankets. We arrived in time to watch the sun set and had a delicious dinner of lamb tajine. The guides brought us mint tea and played some traditional Berber music on their drums. After dinner we climbed the large dune behind the camp and watched the stars, played Berber games and rolled down the dunes. The moon is bright and the sky clear tonight. There are ...

Merzouga, Morocco fazi... away, we saw a faint glow. The glow grew brighter and brighter by the second, and all of a sudden, our first glimpse of the moon appeared as it crested over the sand dunes. This was the most amazing site to see. Its totally indescribable. to be out in the sahara desert, no sign of life anywhere, dunes as far as the eye could see, and watching the full moon rise above the desert.... I'll never forget it. No camera could do it justice, though we all ...
Merzouga, Morocco trg7... campsite from a lower, more manageable dune. The sun rising over the desert was magnificent as suddenly the distant shadowy shapes morphed into clearly visible different size and shaped sand dunes. We headed back barefoot on our camels - taking Iain's excellent advice. It was a perfectly still morning with an electric blue sky. Some breakfast and a shower to dislodge the sand from all the places it had ventured (and I mean all the places) to then begin the long, long drive back to Marrakech.
Merzouga and the Sahara, Morocco claude_and_iain... pita-like sandwich made with chunks of beef, onions and hardboiled egg, and watched as our companions bought it up. We have had many opportunities to ride camels, but this Sahara trek had the most stunning desert sights yet. The rolling golden waves of sand spread out in front of us, unbroken and endless, until they disappeared over the horizon. Trekking in the middle of this enormous space gave us an unshakable feeling of solitude ...
Sahara Desert, Morocco paulandmel... As you can imagine, it was quite uncomfortable! When we got to our camp, we set off to explore the desert on foot. After all the practice we had climbing dunes in Namibia, we decided to put our experience to work and give the Moroccan dunes a try. We were rewarded with a view of endless sand and a very beautiful sunset. The following morning we made the trek again (at 5 am!) to catch the sunrise. Our time spent in the desert was hosted ...
Merzouga, Morocco edamame... three Hassans at the camp, so this is how they refer to him.) We visited the local wells, an oasis and a Berber village. Children followed the group everywhere, hawking necklaces, dolls and toy camels. An oasis is a green area in the desert where plants and trees grow in abundance; as you enter the greenery you can feel the cool, moist air that must be such a relief in scorching 50C temperatures! In this particular oasis, they have date palms, grain crops (wheat and two types of ...
