We met the taxi driver the next morning, and despite one of them saying the road over the mountain pass would be closed due to snow from the day before, the other taxi driver insisted it wasn't. So off we went and about 2 hours outside of Fes there we were in a few feet of snow in the Swiss-like-town of Ifrane, with a snow barrier closing off the route. We sat there for a while with some other cars trying to get through but the guards said we'd have to take a longer road around. About 10 ho...

... piled into a van with a driver (whose name I still don't know) and Hamsa who we met just then and took off driving on a 20 hour round trip road trip - they barely spoke English and we barely speak Arabic. We didn't know where we were going except that we were desert bound. Pure trust at it's finest. They were great, though, and there was absolutely nothing to worry about.)
Our drive home was uneventful - for the ...

... desert after Antarctica. At over 9,000,000 square kilometres it covers most parts of Northern Africa and is larger than Australia. We were to trek in a tiny patch of this desert, easily accessible from Merzouga town. We trekked out into the sand dunes as the sun was getting lower in the sky and watched the contours and colours of the dunes change as we made our way to the tent camp for the night. It was like a beautiful sea of sand. The camp was next to an oasis ...
Merzouga, Morocco inoursuitcase... dunes with nothing else in sight except more sand dunes was incredible. Neither one of us flipped over, but both needed the guide's assistance at certain points...we finished around sunset and headed back to the hotel. Later that night/early morning, we got up around 4:45am and made a short hike to the dunes to see the sunrise. Definitely pretty sweet, although we were constantly on the lookout for scorpions....luckily we only saw some tracks.
Merzouga, Morocco laurenandy... Merinides. This is everything I hate in a hotel except for an amazing birds-eye view of the medina. SHE SAID: Sleeping under the stars at Erg Chebbi dunes was one of the most amazing experiences of my life (despite the bug incident). The air temp was perfect and the sand was slightly warm and the half moon really lit up the whole area. I think that this is the first time I had ever slept outdoors without a ...
Merzouga, Morocco travelbee... our own hands. The five of us rented a car and set off towards the desert for a camel trek and whatever other adventures found us. For the next week, the five of us went from Fez to the furthest south part of Morocco and then all the way to one of the most northern cities near Spain. After packing Monday night and few short directions for Doc and the Moroccan staff, we set off, crammed into a little car, for quit the adventure. The ...
Merzouga, Morocco tamerin... the early morning, we climbed the steep sides of a nearby sand dune to watch the sunrise over the Sahara. The sun rose and the sky caught fire in varying shades of orange and red-a fire that poured out over the endless sandy vastness. For Paul, the lurching motion of a camel plus his poor riding ability always equals painful chafing, so for the return trek he walked beside Mel's camel buddy. We arrived back at our auberge dusty but happy.
Sahara Desert, Morocco paulandmel... stay and quickly before we headed so far into this endless space that we lost our bearings completely. I was having visions of a teeth chattering, scary, dark night in a small car with 4 other people who would probably be cursing each other through the night...Luckily these thoughts were cut short as we approached what appeared to be a palace built out of orange dirt with a lone Range Rover parked in front of it. Hotel Kasbah ended up being our home in the ...
Merzouga, Morocco gracielastanley... warned that the camel blankets they provide - yep, the blankets you sit on while riding the humped beasts - tend to be rather "ripe", but they weren't too bad at all, thank heavens!) When Shannon awoke the next morning and commented on the wonderful sleep she'd had, there were three other people who growled at her, though it didn't take us long to find humour in it all! (Even if I didn't get any sleep, I did enjoy watching the stars through the loosely woven ceiling of the goat-hair tent!)
