... Masterchef judges! It was accompanied by a special treat, Tongba or bamboo, a local drink made by pouring hot water over millet to give a mildly alcoholic warm brew. Tastes a bit like warmed scrumpy and aids sleep quite nicely thank you.
It wasn't too cold at night in spite of the altitude, probably about five degrees, but any exposed flesh soon felt chilly so there wasn't much to do but hunker down in your sleeping bag after dinner so we hit the hay at about ...

After the thali we had a bit of time so went to another posh Darjeeling tea shop. They had all kinds ...

... accepted the innevitable and reluctantly relented and took a seat on the bottom bunk amongst the madness that was occuring in our cabin. We spent most of the day reading or just sitting hanging out the doors watching the world go by. Although we had expected to only need to order a breakfast, due to the delays we needed not only a lunch but a dinner as well on the train. Both were suspiciously similar but nice enough all the same. You got 2 curry dishes, ...

Day 23 - Greener, warmer, brighter pastures

... We were descending about 1000 meters so it was gonna bring the heat. One thing we weren't necessarily looking forward to.

The road had the landslides and the sunken or missing sections as we'd seen before, but also added some piles of rock and massive boulders that had fallen on its surface here and there. Our hearts go out to the four guys with shovels assigned to clear the entire 40 kilometer stretch.
