... we could not understand. A young man disembarked from our cabin and the conductor asked him if he spoke English and if so could he explain the procedure we must follow. He spoke English and he said he was also going to see the ruins. His name was Wojtek and he was from Poland.

He informed us that he was a qualified dentist and medical Doctor and that he was currently doing his Phd in Dentistry. He was 28 spoke English, Italian, some German and Portuguese as well as ...

... gilded mosaics impressed us all. In the basement of the church was the more recently renovated crypt of St. Matthew which was completely adorned in intricate marble inlay on the walls and floors. Very impressive.

... the only real residents who survived were the ones not in Pompeii at the time of the eruption as pretty well everyone actually there perished. Although obviously all the buildings are ruins, you are still able to visualise what the city looked like. When I turned a corner to walk down the main street, I just couldn't believe how long it was, it went for "miles". ... of martyrs in little boxes in the walls. Kind of creepy because you could actually see all of the bones. We weren't allowed to take pictures unfortunately. After the tour of the church we grabbed a gelato and walked the coastline until we arrived back at the car.
