... dig out the first aid kit. I had my bear poking stick just in case, and I had read the sign on what to do if confronted by a bear. For those who don't know what to do if encountered by a bear: Speak firmly to the bear. "Now bear, you KNOW you aren't supposed to be out here mucking about. What are you doing? 12:42 pm Jp was up at 4 but he let me sleep until 8:30. We have rolled through Kansas City already and now Topeka .... We have to be in Durango Colorado by noon ...

In Kansas now, and as I write this ...

... I'm afraid that when we booked our room I didn't realize that on the other side of our hallway we would have had a view of the BNSF facilities here. This Ramada is much like a palace with fountains and pools in the lobby, and vegetation everywhere. Our room is very high class, the nicest yet. Our room here is actually costing us less than the dumpy room in Vernal. Speaking of trains, Topeka used to be the corporate headquarters of ...

... is the midpoint of the entire Route 66 highway. We've passed this exit countless times on other trips and had no idea such a treat was just two minutes from the highway. There is a fun sign showing that Chicago and Los Angeles are each 1139 miles away. Also, the road, although not finished) has a line drawn at the midway point and has Route 66 signs painted on it. We did lots of fun pictures and just enjoyed the stop. Next time we plan ...
