Why does it feel like the building's moving?

Oh apparently it isn't the building so much as our jangled vestibular systems after the long, long flight. Slightly surreal being waited on by almost silent, masked people in the plane. Chinese people seem a lot more addicted to the cult of the paper face mask at times of heightened health awareness than we are in the UK. Still blessedly swine flu free but maybe now I've written that the Gods of hubris will read my blog and strike us down. Not sure how that would work exactly.

Anyway H...

Arrival in Hong Kong

Arrived very weary after the flight. Neither me nor Jon had any sleep. Becky grabbed about 1 and a half hours. Caught the airport express train into central station. It was very clean and efficient. Checked into the hotel at about 9 am. Got a great room with a fantastic view of the harbour. Caught about another 1 and a half hours sleep before lunch at the hotel. Went on a tour of Hong Kong Island in the afternoon. To our surprise the tour consisted of a small people mover car, driver and a gu...

Hotel - good, nice room on the 22nd floor which meant we could look down on the other buildings right next to us! I think Viagra is part of the hong kockians (as Hayley thinks they are actually called) diet! Pace! City itself has many old trams to get around on and is full of skyscrapers! There is a Macdonald...

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China and was a British Crown colony until 1997. Consisting of a peninsula and 236 islands on China's south coast, Hong Kong has developed into one of the world's top financial centres. It is China's sole international financial centre with a highly developed capitalist economy, and has a "high degree of autonomy" in all areas except foreign affairs and defence. Renowned for its expansive skyline and deep natural...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Hotel Jen Hong Kong

NIce Hotel

from TSW42
Had a good stay at this hotel, was a mix up about the room, we were suppose to get a harbour view but instead got upgraded to a king bed but looking at the mountains.

The hotel was nicely appointed neat and clean. Staff were friendly and provided a shuttle bus to the train station on leaving.

Close to the tram and plenty of shops.

Would stay again

Enjoyed this hotel

from Trav11
This hotel lived up to the Accor brand and was on Hong Kong Island which was where all the activities we wished to engage in were located. Having been to Hong Kong before and stayed in Kowloon, we preferred the much quieter Hong Kong Island for our 2 nights' stay.

Although not on the main part of the island, the hotel usually runs a shuttle to the main district but being Easter, it was not running. However, this ended up being a bonus because walking for the half hour or so to the main district, we found the local bargain shops. These were in small alleys off the main road as well as along the main road. We had never found such cheap bargains all over the world as here.

Our hotel room was very spacious and had every convenience we expected and even a view of the harbour - not a very good one as a few buildings in front blocked some of it - but nevertheless there was a view.

We would certainly stay here again!

Enjoyed the Novotel

from lzb
Our family of 2 adults/2 children (aged 6 and 7) stayed at the Novotel for 6 nights in two connecting rooms. We paid less for two rooms here than we would have for 1 room with 2 double beds closer to Central or in TST and had the advantage of two bathrooms etc.

The hotel location was not a problem - we mostly used the free hotel shuttle or the tram (one block away) to reach the MTR/Ferry terminal. When we were really tired we used a taxi - about HKD30 - 35 from Central or Sheung Wan.

The rooms were clean and the staff were always helpful and friendly. They were happy to empty both mini bars to stop our 6 yo from helping himself - we stocked them with milk, sodas and water from the supermarket half a block way.

The pool was open from 0700 - 2100 (except on the afternoon of a storm warning) and towels were available from the gym.

Internet access in the lobby bar was HKD20 for 30 minutes.

We wanted a comfortable rather than deluxe hotel and the Novotel met our expectations.

Somewhere different next time

from matthew
the Novotel harbourview is a little out of the way for HK as it's about 20 mins walk to the nearest MTR station (have stayed in Mong Kok before and got to central quicker than from here!). Room was fine and clean and staff were friendly but the laundry service was really expensive for Asia and we ended up paying about £35 UK for some underwear and 2 pairs of jeans and 2-3 t-shirts. Although not a bad hotel for somewhere to sleep, it would be easier to find a cheaper place that would be closer to the mtr for those later nights out, or rely on taxi-cabs. Basically, anywhere you would want to go as a tourist in Hong Kong is at least 20-30 minutes away.

Location:out the way

from dior_crazy
This hotel, don't get me wrong was fantastic. It had clean rooms and friendly staff. However I felt the name harbourview was a little misleading. It is situated in a more residential area and is not in the tourst area of Hong Kong. A tram line is at the end of the road and it's a cheap way of getting round this city as it only costs 2 dollars for one way (about 16 pence). The pool is nicely situated on the roof and there's a gym.

I reccomend the buffet in the restaurant upstairs if you are interested in trying something new. They had sushi, noodles, a variety of fish , meat and salads.

Not a bad hotel at all!

from Crazycat
This hotel is great if you want a base away from the main tourist areas. It's located on a fairly busy, bustling street - like most streets in Hong Kong. It's about a 20 minute walk to the nearest bus terminal, but the hotel runs a free shuttle bus to the bus terminal and ferry terminal anyway, which was fab. You can also catch the shuttle back too! They don't run that regularly, but they seemed to be around when we needed a ride! You can get a timetable from Reception.

The room is pretty much the same as most Novotel's, clean, tidy - nice view of the harbour - slippers, hairdryer, tv, phone etc all supplied.

The restuarant for breakfast is really awful - it's looks really tired, and the food was pretty terrible considering the cost. The food selection was quite varied, but the 'hot' food was cold, and the fried eggs were very nearly raw - ie the 'white' was still yellowey - where it hadn't been cooked - yuk! We had breakfast there once, left most of it, and went to Starbucks instead in the bus terminus!!

The coffee bar near the lobby is really nice though - they also have PCs with internet access too.

The staff were really friendly, and were always very helpful - especially when asking the way to places - they provided cards with the hotel's address in Chinese, so you could always get back if the cab driver didn't speak English - which happened a lot.

I'd stay there again, as it was quiet at night, and it felt safe. The staff were ace, and the room was pretty good considering the bargain price we got - £19 per person per night!!
