Melaka State, Malaysia carolgregI arrived in Jerantut, a small town and the last town before the jungle (that is Taman Negara national park) in the afternoon. My chosen accommodation was a guest house just next to the bus station (in case I decided to take a public bus tomorrow to the jetty that will take me to the "jungle"). I had lunch at one of the food stalls and wondered around town. I decided to ...
Jerantut, Pahang, Malaysia moki_travelsDay 131 - The train arrived at 6:20am and I found the first half of the journey absolutely freezing, having to sit cross-legged to retain the heat in my feet! I thought it must have been the result of amazing air con, but as the sun came out, the sweltering second half provedthis notto be the case! Every woman onboard was wearing a headscarf and as I sat there the odd one out, I contemplated what life would have been like being brought up where women always ...
Taman Negara, Malaysia becpowell(Jim) Tropical rain forests are justifiably celebrated for their biodiversity. Last night we saw both red and black ants, several species of moths, and a spider the size of a teacup. That was just in our room. Last night's sleep was not terribly restful, between the kids' fear of the spider emerging from under the bed where he fled when we tried to defenestrate him, and the ant bites that covered my neck the next ...
Taman Negara Rain Forest, Malaysia oneyearaway... Katharine were curled in next to me as I read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban aloud. It felt like one of those unexpected snow days when you curl up on the couch with your kids, except it was about 99¢ª with 99.99% humidity. I told Jim that everything was great, but that it was a shame they couldn't do anything about the weather. The semi-English speaking gentleman behind us just glared at me -- I think maybe he didn't appreciate the humor.
Jerantut, Malaysia oneyearaway...
Jerantut, Malaysia mathieu.parcevaWe get to the Rainforest and are checked straight into a hostel. We then go down to one of the floating restaurants to pick up our passes to go into the rainforest and have dinner. As the place gets dark all the insects come out, including the very noisy secarders (sp) which seem to just hurl themselves at anything and scream really loudly. We quickly run away back to our room and have an early night ready for trekking the next day. After a bit of a lie in we ...
Taman Negara, Malaysia hibbs... own (to our great suprise) along paths that had been set out - some more frequently stomped on than others!! We were (again to our great suprise) able to spot all sorts of wild birds, leeches, monkeys, wild boar, monitor lizards (they walk just like British bull dogs), huge ants and even some elephant poo!! One day we trecked out to a hide where i found a guest book and somthing written by Alex Lee my great friend Nic's sister!! What a small old world!! We also ...
Taman Negara, Malaysia liv.ltd... that we saw a massive snake swimming in the water. The head was out of the water and it was huge. We only grounded the boat once on the way so that wasn't too bad. We stayed at a great little place called Park Lodge on the outskirts of the rainforest, the people were really nice and gave you free lifts to and from the meeting point for our tour (Floating Restaurant). The first evening there we went on a night jungle ...
Jerantut, Malaysia mscoones... told me that there were no seats available until 1 in the afternoon the next day so booked the ticket, hailed a taxi, and set off for a hotel recommended by the trusty guidebook. The hotel was nice and ridicuously cheap but won't bore you wih the details. Next day got the bus and then hopped straight on to another to get to the jungle. The place where everyone stays is a small village on the opposite bank of the jungle river to the ...
