Our guide was waiting outside our hotel at 07:30 as we had prearranged with him; we were planning to leave Amritsar that day and he was going to take us to the train station. The news that he brought with him however was not good. During the course of the night, there had been two politically motivated arson attacks in India, which had resulted in the deaths of two lower caste people ...... they were burnt alive in their house. Consequently all hell had broken loose through out India, with pr...
Amritsar, India danandrosemarie... literally pluck one out of the black sky with your hand and we all spent what seemed like hours just star gazing in perfect silence. In fact during the night I woke up a few times and after seeing the ceiling, had a little wow as I checked that I wasn’t dreaming. That all being said, another blanket each might have made it a little more comfortable but “Camelman” didn’t think we would sleep outside with the kids. He clearly doesn’t know the up-for-it Cawleys!

Only kidding.

We were due to leave Bikaner that evening, after our last bus experience we decided to try the sleeper train which was scheduled to leave at midnight. We packed our bags, ate dinner and headed for the station. Almost as soon as we walked onto the ...

Bikaner, Rājasthān, India seorajeshkumar... lunch place that Brian had in his book as a recommendation. Actually, I think we might have taken the rickshaws into the city too, because I know we were on them three times, not two. They waited for us outside the restaurant (Moomal) while we ate (getting an extra 100 rupees for it) and then took us back to the hotel for a short break. I got a masala dosa and a lassi for lunch; I thought the yogurt would help my digestion. It's hard to know ...

Bikaner, Rajasthan, India mikela... and then that person made a speech or a wish or something. I couldn't figure that bit out. We arrived at midnight, but we had a hotel in mind and caught an auto-rickshaw there. It was closed, but the one next door was open - so we went with that. When we saw the room I said "great", and at the time I meant it - but I was pretty tired. The next morning I took a better account of our surroundings, and decided they could be best described as post-apocalyptic - until I looked in ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India waynekreger... and our hotel, Fort Khimsar. As soon as we became aware of the Fort our vehicle was swamped by hundreds of turbaned men yelling and covering the road. Davinder forced his way through the crowds and into the driveway and into another world. Residence of the 18th, 19th and 20th Maharaja of Khimsar this fort is converted into the most gorgeous hotel. Though we like to imagine the crowd was because of our arrival, apparently it was actually ...
Bikaner, India dibs... it out of dust ville through leary packs of dogs (that prompted me to wave my trusty arboreal canine-deterrent club (AC-DC) for the first time) and hung over bodies with dew on our finger hair and fleeces. A chai and biscuit stop in a wood smoke filled roadside shack was snuck quite ingeniously under the mist so that only we and the chai man and his dog could tell that we weren't cycling. We continued along National Highway 11 (NH-11 that goes from Jaipur to ...
Ratangargh - Sri Dungagar 64km, India hubbardtim... times of old. We had a look, seeing many a photo with Lord Mountbatten, George the fifth and Eddie the eighth, the abdicator. We found the trophy room, and with the snooker table in the middle, the walls were covered with the skins of lions, tigers, leopards, wart hogs, deer and a couple of sloth bears. There were also loads of photos showing various ministers from different countries, with their trophies, i.e. lions, tigers, leopards, wart hogs, deer ...
