Buddist caves and art work - 2nd BC to the 6th AD
These caves were re-discovered in the early 19th century and one of the British exploring party called John Smith wrote his name in graffitti on a cave wall - the vandal! The sculptures and art work (temperas) are well preserved and give an excellent insight into life during this time.

Saturday 29th After breakfast, again by our cook, we drove to the Ajanta caves, excavated between 200BC and 800AD. Rediscovered by the British in 1819, the 30 caves are Buddhist temples with carvings and paintings within them. We again bushcamped and had dinner supplied by Rafik.
