    Oh no! Not another damn castle

    ... in fact all wood carving, skilfully painted to resemble stone.





    after the castle visit we go for a pizza. There is a huge thunderstorm so the planned short ride to find a local forest steam railway is abandoned. It's so beautiful here we just may be forced into staying another day. It's a hard life, but someone's got to do it!

    ... Orava Castle, reputed to be the most beautiful castle in Slovakia.

    We hope to find lodging near to the castle so we can visit on foot tomorrow. We first see the imposing 12th century edifice from a sweeping viaduct that takes traffic past the town. So dropping off the viaduct we follow the signs for the castle. In the centre of town, and just below the castle, is the rather elegant boutique hotel Toliar. ...

    ... we got to the cave. He warned us it would be very difficult and slippery so those who didn't think they could do it should stay back and wait. We all went. In order to get into the cave we had to climb up a ladder. Then there was a chain bolted to the cave walls that we could hold onto and pull ourselves up. I couldn't believe how hard it was because there weren't any foot holes and it was wet. When i got in there all I could think of was, **** I really wish I had ...

    ... step! So, we hired a small bus to take us back to our B&B. For 5 zloties ($1.65) each, it was so worth it! All I wanted to do was take a shower and chill out the rest of the afternoon.

    Others walked back into town to look around and shop. Dinner was at a nice local restaurant next to our B&B. Then it was off to bed and get ready to head to Krakow by bus tomorrow.

    ... so worth it for the great views (not to mention the free wine!). After the boat cruise we went to a nearby bar called Instant. Instant is a ruin bar which is a huge trend in Budapest of turning old ruins into modern bars and I really liked it. Others went onto a rooftop bar but after such a long day (and wearing extremely painful new shoes) I returned to the hostel for a good sleep.
