Split - quiet but good weather

... beach again as it was such a nice day.
Walked to Marjan Forest Park and hired bikes and rode around park. Some pretty steep hills but awesome views from the top of the park and heaps fun going back down.
Went back to Fife for dinner since it was so awesome and so cheap and had tripe and roast veal.
Fife is some of the best and best value food I've had in ages. Especially compared to most of the other touristy places in Split

Beauty, beaches, and bugs

... Since it’s late October and all the locals do it, we put our jeans on and headed out for the day. Within an hour of walking around we realized that even though we would suffer stares from the locals, we could not wear jeans on this island. It was too warm. And we wanted to go swimming. So we went back to our room and changed into shorts and slippers “flip-flops.” Before we were even out the door, our “nana” caught a glimpse of ...

What we thought would be a vacation...

... with him quite a bit to get him back to the price we thought we were getting. In the end, it worked out and we had a 3-bedroom apartment with a really beautiful view all to ourselves for 480 Kuna altogether (that’s only $16 each a night which is really cheap in Europe). We got settled in just in time for sunset, took some pretty pictures from our lanai, and then went to the market down the street for groceries. We cooked a good dinner ...

Diocletian's Palace, circa 300AD

... also noted for his persecution of early Christians. After Diocletian’s death, the palace was used as a retreat by other Roman rulers.

Politically and geographically, Croatia has always been at the junction of the Western Roman and Eastern Byzantine Empires, and was frequently a region in conflict. When the Roman Empire was divided in 395 AD, Dalmatia was split in two. Present day Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina remained with the Western Roman Empire ...

... ground and on hand on the railing to get across. Truly insane. It really started to add some stress after a while and after 4pm and 34 miles of fighting it we jumped on a bus and rode the last 30 miles to Split. Both Split and the town we stopped in earlier that day (Sibinik) were super cool. White stone buildings with entire mazes of passageways called roads, but only ...

Rural Island Fun on Korcula

... the ones with the menus in the most languages - however we have decided that the restaurants with the least amount of foreign language menus tend to provide the highest value culinary offerings. In Korcula we were further assisted by chowhound.com and a few other offerings in selecting Adio Mare for a try. Adio Mare delivered the goods with two nights in a row of outstanding atmosphere, service, and food at reasonable prices. Our favorites here were the complimentary ...

... small village where we bought a bottle of Vodka for that night on board to share with the crew. As we were the youngest on board by far (which was fine with us cause we wanted to relax not party too hard) it was just us, a french guy and the crew awake at night. I decided it was time I perfected my guitar playing skills and serenade Linda with Hey there Delilah which we played on my ...

My hidden treasure!

... there were nudist rocks and ledge areas! We chose our own cement ledge overlooking the Old town and mountains and sun baked for the next couple of hours. It was bliss, apart from the hardness of the cement and the company of ants- but the view made up for it. Croatia especially (and Nice) has changed by perception on what a beach is- it appears that for an area to be called a beach it doesn't actually need to have sand and can even be a cement ledge! And l have also discovered ...

Hvar Smchar

... The actual castle was more interesting than anticipated due to different levels, all with spectacular views of the harbor and surrounding islands, and immense cannons. I didn't like how they had moved the canons from their original positions to new ones to provide tourist safety (subtract a half tourist star). Collette played on the cannons and as we were on our fourteenth no when the inevitable happened. Fat droplets began hitting the café's umbrellas like an out of ...

... and email makes it simple to stay in touch. Two days grew into three, then four, but we had to limit our stay to five days if we still wanted to see the Black Sea and Turkey before our date in Cairo. There are several islands along the Dalmatian cost and we had envisioned visiting several on the way to Dubrovnik, but in Hvar we found nothing but beauty and ease. Young boys playing soccer in the streets grew into old men throwing bocce balls as the sun ...
