locals. In those places I had some very good regional cuisine. I ate two
restaurant meals in Trieste and both of them were delicious. Italians know how
to do pizza, pasta, and other Italian food well. Much of the pizza and pasta I
had in the Balkans, especially Croatia, was quite poor, but in Italy they know
how to serve their pasta al dente and their pizza thin and crisp.

blah-blah took a political turn after all that beer and complimentary bitter
after-dinner liqueurs. Nigel, the father, was a real live committed British
socialist. I don’t think I’ve ever met one of those before – Labor supporters
and left-leaning thinkers, yes, but strong ideological socialists, no. Needless
to say, the political conversation lasted well into the night, wrecking my
plans for getting an early start in the morning.

The big tents set up were dedicated to all local gourmet products – wines, mushrooms, olive oils, cheeses, mushrooms, salamis, prsut (cured ham), conserves – with unlimited free tastings. Well, the wine was only almost free at 30 kunas (less than $5) for a souvenir glass and unlimited ...

The Parish Church of Saint George is especially well endowed with works of art, including a statue of crucified Christ that’s considered one of the most important works of Slovenian medieval art.

Some final thoughts on our road trip to Slovenia, Bosnia and Croatia. The people have been so friendly and outgoing toward us. They are building their economy around tourism and I think it is working for them. The food has been fabulous for ...
