After a lazy morning we took the shortish trip to Browershafen with John doing the navigation through the buoyed channels, and at one stage was a bit worrying as we had withy's (usually meaning very shallow) in the middle of our buoyed channel, and yes we were in the correct place! We entered Browershafen through the open flood gates where the hafenmeister called out to us on a tannoy ...

I had a fantastic time in Bruges, Venice of the North, on a day trip, although it was very crowded and touristy. The entire city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. I got there early so started in the historic Markt with an Earl Grey outside at a cafe under the heater watching the square come to life. ... considering it's so great. It's violent and unpredictable, which is really what makes it so fun.
In the film, Bruges is sort of a boring place. Lots of swans and churches and canals. But for some reason that appeals to us. So it became our first city break from London.
We took the Eurostar at 10:58 to Brussels, and from there caught the Intercity train to Bruges. So in three hours we were all that way. It was like teleporting.

Later we wandered around the main shopping area being Zuidandstraat and Steenstraat, where we found the likes of clothes stores Zara and Mango in amongst old cobbled lane ways and historic buildings. A very eclectic mix. We also found beautiful cosy tea rooms where we stopped in for an old fashioned tea experience and some Belgian chocolate ...

In the afternoon we caught the train from Brussels to Bruges, which took around 50 minutes and cost us nothing as we had Eurail passes. Looking at the map, the main square of Bruges was right in the middle of what almost looked like an island, where the old town is, so we decided to just follow the street signs from the train station.
