We've looked at the tourist information and decided on some of the trips that we'd like to do in addition to skiing. We all want to try snowmobiling and to make a trip at night to look for the aurora. We'd also quite like to see huskies or reindeer and go on a journey by sled. My preference would be for a reindeer trip, but they all seem to be more expensive. Paul and I have decided to do an ice-fishing trip, travelling out to a ...
Saariselkä, Finland starfish... steep sides, of many of the hills in Scotland. Several slopes are floodlit, to encourage skiers in the long polar night. The resort is the centre of a network of over 240km of cross-country routes, including 34km of floodlit trails. Looking at the map for a wider view, these trails like to national trails, criss-crossing Finland, and even crossing the borders into Norway and Sweden. It also seems that crossing into Russia is ...
Saariselkä, Finland starfish... carved with steps leads up to a sleeping place in the apex of the roof. There is a small porthole overlooking the living area, making it reminiscent of Heidi. Beside the ladder there are a couple of steps leading down into the bathroom, a multipurpose wet room/sauna/mop cupboard, but with underfloor heating, making it a lovely place to hang around naked in. After potatoes baked in our wood-burning stove for ...
Saariselkä, Finland starfishDespite the storm our train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi was delayed only for an hour. That was a plesant surprise actually, because some trains were delayed for many hours. Aino joined us in Tampere. She had been waiting for the train there for more than two hours, but she almost lost it... She was helping two traveller girls, whose flight to London was cancelled.... Well, she did catch the train and our journey began. We slept well in the train ...
Ivalo, Lapland, Finland inke... still follow and live what I believe to be true to the best of my abilities. Climate change is just one way of approaching an understanding of this philosophy of new materialism in practice, and I may or may not stick with that topic for my phd. But tomorrow I will share this completely different though (I believe) highly relevant perspecitive on climate change, and I believe that matters. That is my form of activism now.
Inari, Lapland, Finland moonrise... It was definitely cold but feels so amazing when you know you can scramble back over the snowy bank up to the warm and cleansing heat of the sauna. This was day 2 of sauna, but last night we couldn't swim in lake Inari because it is still frozen! Its quite chilly up here... and very light...
TK :)
Lapland, Finland tomtenskatt... to walk. The further north we got the ice turned into a frosty coating and then into a light dusting of snow and finally turning into a rather thick covering of snow in some places (heavy snow in September should hopefully convey just how cold it was, currently about 3 degrees C). We reached the furthest north that we were due to go, Inari. A small town built on the edge of the largest lake in Finland with over 100 islands and 1000 km of ...
Ivalo, Finland simonlantDuring my last day in Inari, almost everyone I met was asking me if I had seen the bears, and upon some questioning, told me there were supposed to be some aggressive brown bears (because they had cubs) in the outskirts of the town. A good time to leave, I don't really want to see an aggressive bear (actually I do, as long as it does not see me). So, as I had missed my plane and was short on money, I decided to try my hand at ...
Ivalo, Finland renard... in Ivalo, so had to rent a cabin in the camping (hotel Inari was full) and then start exploring the surroundings. The village has almost nothing, except for the Siida museum, about the nature in the area and the Sámi people that live there. But the forest is really worth missing your plane, and I spent one day and a half (returning to sleep in the cabin) wandering in it or just sitting by one of the many lakes you stumble upon and enjoying the peace, as a cold ...
