... for the local soba noodles with mountain spring vegetables (we'd already seen fresh fern curls in the vegetable shop) - on the way we came across a Japanese doll shop - these dolls are used for a variety of purposes and ceremonies. The owner spoke good English and spent time explaining it all to us, it was really interesting. We were frustrated by not finding the two recommended restaurants as everything is in Japanese but we came across a big crowd and delicious food smells in ...

The local villagers use the cooking onsen to slowly cook vegetables and onsen eggs which ...

    Friday - April 3rd

Friday was another warm spring day. It was also very windy so they did not open the top of the mountain, but opened the Hikage and Nagasaka triple chairs instead. It was nice to ski some different runs but the warm blustery wind and overcast conditions did not make it the nicest day. We made the most of it, having ...

... as a glass house when the sun is out.

Hattoji used to be and is still home to a complex of Buddhist temples dedicated to a branch which valued the importance of the mountains. Walking around the area you can be forgiven for getting lost in the breathtaking views and stopping to admire the many miniature shrines dotted around for the avid explorer to find.

Another boon for this location is that for 2 of my three days here I was by myself. It ...
