The bus trip from Prapat to Bukittingi was far better than I had anticipated after reading the horror stories in Lonely Planet. The roads have obviously been improved, and the trip which used to take between twenty and thirty hours is now supposed to be thirteen hours. It actually took seventeen. We had one breakdown and the bus got stuck in a tunnel, a problem which was eventually solved by simply removing a rear-view mirror. The four-hour delay was fine with me because it meant I arrived at...

... some very tasty pastries to have with my morning coffee in the room. The room is very comfortable and when I compared it to other similar hotels in more or less the same area it was very comparable (it seemed somewhat better value) and was the only one offering free internet access from the room.Although I did not check the room at Ibis Hotel in the old part of Surabaya and close to most tourist sites it also seemed to be very decent price wise). I ...

Salut tout le monde, Nous allons bien (ma phrase favorite) Nous devons vous faire un resume de notre disparition vers le Mont-Bromo. ... cars and bicycle taxis (sort of rickshaw thing). On arrival you take a plastic box/tray and load it with whatever you fancy....small, whole fish, fish steaks on skewers, chicken legs and livers, tofu, eggs - vaguely omelette-style, aubergine, etc. and then you pass him the lot and find a table. The choice of drink is iced tea or orange juice (the former was very nice) and then the cooked food arrives + a dish of rice + a bowl of sambal (the hottest, oiliest ...

... arriving in Probolingo just in time to miss the last public bemo onward to Bromo. I probed the various private ticket agencies in the bus terminal, and settled on a reputable looking one run by helpful Mr Toto. He was able to sell me a Probolingo > Bali bus ticket (for the next day) at a price under that recommended in Lonely Planet, but there were no further opportunities for me to get to Bromo by bus at this late hour. My best bet was to hire a motorcycle ...

... several pipes stretched out from the top and steams of hot sulfur were coming out of them. I got even closer to take their photo. Then it happens . . . Everything happened so sudden but in slow motion like a trance. Due to the sudden shift of the wind, a blanket of sulfuric acid engulfed the workers and me. All around me was white and I could hear the workers warning to cover my mouth and nose. I couldn't specify where the voice came from because although they were a few ...

They are: Don't accelerate or decelerate very quickly. Don't drive very fast. (35 mph seemed pretty standard.) Don't be agressive. Honk your horn lightly to let people know where you are. Do not use your horn to indicate anger. (In fact, don't be angry. Chill out.) If the ...

They're the stingy *******s that aren't willing to pay 20p to share a taxi to the train station when it's raining a la Noah's 40 days and 40 nights (and the loudest thunder I've ever heard) or would rather stand up on a train for 4 hours than pay 50p for a seat. Thank God he wasn't travelling in the same direction to me. Adios miser.
