This morning we did the Rick Steves walking tour of Colmar. It is such a charming place. There is a fantastic and huge market place with fresh meats, fish, cheeses, sweets, and other "produits de Alsace". We enjoyed it. Then we decided to take the car to a couple more nearby villages, Eguisheim and Turckheim. Eguisheim was recently voted one of "the most beautiful villages in France". It was certainly charming! Round outer walls and an inner wall as well. All of the lanes ...

... Italy. David is happy! Colmar, where we will be staying for two nights is not far from Strasbourg, less than 50 km. but along the way is the Route du Vins - the road of wines. Here is where they make Riesling and other white wines, but also Crémant, the regions version of Champagne. Along this road are small villages very close together that we are so happy to have visited. We were just amazed at ...

... Europe, and it went around points of interest in the town. We returned to the old Saint Martin Dominican cathedral, now home to many paintings of religious significance, dating back to the C15th. M particularly liked Martin Schongauer's 'La Vierge au buissan de roses' loosely translating to the Virgin Mary with Child among roses. We have been into many cathedrals and churches here and they always have great stained glass windows. A delicious ...

... I started with a glass of WONDERFUL champagne. Eldon ordered us a lovely bottle of Alsatian (from Eguisheim) Pinot Noir for the rest of the dinner. We got sparkling water and a lovely bread basket brought to us. They had salted butter and unsalted butter for our bread. That's a first for us. First we were served a plate of beginers. Our first course was a foie Gras with figs and an autumn salad with a very light balsamic vinaigrette to cut ...

    Tuesday 19 August

Still cool, but with sunny intervals. Decided to stay an
extra night here, to explore the local area.

Spent the morning housekeeping. Afternoon ride into
nearby, lakeside town of Gérardmer. Very pleasant forested, countryside around
here, with pretty chalet type houses. Lots of walks and cycle rides, with
    skiing in the winter ...
