A brand new hotel that opened after the devastating earthquake. The hotel is definitely a European design. The rooms are nice, but compact. It is right in the heart of downtown, just around the corner from the damaged Anglican Cathedral.

A nice and simple place to stay. It has everything you need in a Hotel, with none of the stuff you don't really need, but pay a premium for at other places. Highly recommended.

Clean and tidy, very basic but centrally located for a quick look around.

        TranzAlpine Train & Christchurch

We departed Greymouth at about 14:30, some 40 minutes late. We were onboard the Kiwi Rail, TranzAlpine train, heading to Christchurch. It is called the TranzAlpine because it bisects the South Island of New Zealand, going over and through the Southern Alps. We were all excited for the penultimate portion of our tour of the South Island.

Our hotel and the neighbouring Novotel were built some twelve months after the earthquake. The magnitude 6.3 earthquake caused widespread damage on 22 February 2011 as it occurred at a shallow depth of 5km (3.1 miles) during lunchtime when Christchurch was at its busiest. Almost two-thirds of those killed were inside the Canterbury Television …

We started off at a gentle pace today, leaving the hotel at 10.15. We had enjoyed our drive to Kaikora so much yesterday that we drove north again to retrace our route for some 30 kms. This was a brilliant way to spend the morning. Once again we were treated to the best and most picturesque road section in the world. The road is metres away from …

That 'end of daylight savings' sleep in didn't happen, with a fire alarm sounding early this morning at the hotel. I was unsure if it was fire or earthquake but thank goodness it didn't seem to be anything vital as it stopped before our confusion clarified! Plus a check of the nearby dining room showed nobody there reacting. We headed off for a …

We drove through farming country into Mt. Cook National Park, stopping at Lake Pukaki - the water is such a beautiful blue. Then it was on to Lake Tekapo Airport from where we had the most amazing flight - over Mt. Cook, Mt. Tasman, Murchison River, Tasman, Fox & Franz Josef glaciers, Lake Tekapo & even saw icebergs. Simply incredible.
