Trip to the Cathedral and the Old Town

The other two tours in Madeira and Lanzzarrotte we planned well in advance, but the trip to Santiago de Compostela was a last minute decision based on the recommendation of the two couples who we had the pleasure of dining with on the cruise. I'm glad we decided to go. It was quite a long drive, but well worth the effort. We walked around the oldest part of the town where the ...

Change in the weather.

We travelled through thick fog over and through the mountains on typically heroic Spanish roads. They cut through mountains and build viaducts over the valleys. We drove through and around weary looking Pilgrims to our campsite which was on the Camino de Santiago. It was closed. After some interesting encounters with some locals, one old man practically ran away when asked for directions, we found this camp site.

The centre ...

Free weekend in Santiago!

... Doglas chain-smokes and drinks several Red Bull and whiskey's, clearly looking peeved about the situation. About an hour later, he tries to bring us to nightclub, also in his mafia circle, but we decline. He leaves, we spend about 10 minutes more at our VIP place, and then decide to start looking for somewhere else.

It is about 3am at this time, aka right when clubs should start to open, and it is a Saturday night. However, the streets are COMPLETELY ...

Galicia, day 3!

... la Alameda, a 5 minute walk from the Cathedral, where we got an amazing panoramic view over the city and of the cathedral. We then hurried back to the cathedral for a tour of the bishop's palace and cathedral roof, which are attached to the Cathedral proper. The palace was not particularly interesting, as far as palaces go, because it was mostly empty. But it was totally worth the climb when we got to the roof of the Cathedral. From there, we had amazing views of the entire ...

... 8230; and the next day it’s MY shoulder that hurts? I’m a wimp LOL

During Hungry Heart something I never expected happened: I forgot the words. You can wake me in the middle of the night and I tell you that I’ve left my wife and kids in Baltimore Jack but on August 2nd my mind just went blank. I was very glad that Spanish people sing every word, make noise ALL the time and hum along the music if no words are being sung, so no ...

La Catedral de Santiago de Compostela

... I don't know if they ever visited here, but if not they missed an amazing aspect of Catholic history. I went and visited the tomb of St. James and hugged the statue that serves as the center point behind the altar (a traditional thing that everyone does). The gold and silver decorations are just unbelieveable-a picture does not do them justice, but I tried to capture it for you as best as I could.

Santiago the Compostella: visiting Casa Encantada

... www.causaencantada.org/ ) During my stay here I helped out at the diner and at the monthly streetmarket, with secondhand clothes an stuff and (mainly anarchist) books and leaflets, which Casa Encantada organises to collect money for the social centre. Besides I visited the old centre, the market, a filmfestival, the university and some nice parques. Also I tried to make people enthousiast to start a Rhythms of Resistance acionsambaband, but at the ...

Hangin with Bing and Adam's flight home

... you are holdin it down in Indiana. So we hang out at Amy´s place for a while, and then we go out to dinner at 9:30. Amy has a cool roommate named Kelsey and her boyfriend Ryan. In spain they don't eat dinner until around 10, and they dont go out to the bars until around 2 in the morning. Crazy stuff. So we go to this little restaurant down the way that Amy knows the owner. He walks up and Amy says, well, we will need a bottle of wine to start of ...

Peregrinos on El Camino de Santiago

... to meet the main route, rather than the Samos route, and run into a team of 16 Aussies, Kiwis and Poms who are paying 800 pounds for the privilege of walking for 10 days, having their bags carried, all found in 2 to 3 star hotels. We crack on pace to beat them to a lunching place, then up over a hill and down into Sarria, which is fairly large, but are given a set of shells let into the pavement as a route guide, around in a circular route, over the bridge, up the ...
