... turning back.
While in the Polish part of the Tatry you can hike any time of the year, in the Slovakian one there are more restrictions. Between October and May, entering the Slovakian Tatra National Park is prohibited. As far as tthe Polish Tatra National Park, the rescue team always displays a note both in each mountain hostel and at every entrance to the park about the level of the avalanche danger.
... with jacuzzi but, nonetheless, it still has the atmosphere of a small hamlet nestled at the foot of the mountains.
So as not to come out too biased, let me describe briefly the biggest drawback of Bukowina Tatrzańska, which is its location. It is situated on the hills, and thus no street is horizontal. If you want to go anywhere, you should take into account that at least one way you'll be climbing up. It's a problem if ...
... His sleeping partner, Miska, a bearded climber mountain man spent the night under the starry sky in the grass.
Jon and I looked at eachother in disdain, at the clock, and back at eachother, moaning softly, as we climbed out into the 4AM pre-dawn greyness... Quickly we packed the tent away, wet as it was from the morning dew, planning to take it out when we arrived. As soon as I got into the van, next to Miska, I closed my eyes for a second, and woke briefly when ...
... from Stary Smokovec (at 985m) up to Hrebienok and on past lots of spectacular waterfalls to a viewpoint at 1420m with views up Ve'lka Studena Dolina (Big Cold Valley), which is living up to its name and is snow covered above the tree line. Ali & Matt - we had originally planned to walk up this valley as it's meant to be a good place to see marmots but it looks like we would not have got very ...

... the following days. I first headed to the towns tourist information center where a very helpful English speaking woman told me everything I needed to know about the Tatras. I referenced affordable accommodations and she said she had a phone number of a local family that would be willing to provide me a bedroom for the night for as little as 10US dollars. Sure enough, I was all about cheap accommodations. This town is situated on an incline, gradually gaining altitude ...
Stary Smokovec, Slovakia jaywehrs... Luckily, it looked like most of the trees above the town were still standing. It started to pour and thunder was shaking the place as I arrived, so I figured that was a good time to duck under an awning and grab a quick snack. Once the rain let up a bit I went to the tourist office to try and book a room for the next few nights. The lady who worked there had been to Ontario 2 years and was very excited to help me out. She phoned around to the places I ...
Stary Smokovec, Presov, Slovakia lindsaym... a big pot of hearty gulasch soup!! however our pension didn't have any cutler so we had to share my one travel spoon, but hey ho, the things you do when you're travelling :-) From here we also did a day trip to Liptovsky Mikolaus to see an ice cave. As luck was having it that day we were waiting constantly for public transport only to find out when we finally go thtere that we had missed the last tour by 20mins!! Just then a tour bus truned up and they had booked a ...
Stary Smokovec, Slovakia herby... would have been fascinating with no audio tour. The rest of the day was spent hiking up the Sucha Bela trail. This trail is fairly well-known because portions of it consist of steep ladders, steps, and chains. It was a little nerve-wracking, I'm afraid of heights and don't normally do well with ladders. But the trail was fun, and the views from the top of the trail were gorgeous.
Levoca, Slovakia andread... some cheap clothes (Yay good exchange rate for once!!), and then headed to Angela for dinner. This time it was dessert that was slovak. Crepes with fresh fruit and slovak chocolate with real whipped cream. Wow. I can't beleive how good the food is. and in slovakia, I think that the food is a major part of the culture, so I loved to try it all. After such a long and active day, we decided it best to just grab a movie and head to bed. Sunday we went to church for Palm sunday, and it was ...
