Today we continue our journey southward, covering some 450kms from Vilnius in Lithuania to Warsaw in Poland. It means an early start and a long day on the bus. To help fill in the day, our tour guide provides some interesting insight into the recent history and why attitudes are what they are today.

The Heart of Poland

Our final capital was Warsaw, Poland. The weather was pretty dreary here and I wish we would have seen sunshine as I think the city would have seemed more beautiful. It is a thriving city with lots of traffic and wonderful shopping malls. Between 85 to 90% of the city was destroyed in World War II and much of what one encounters is “Stalin&# …

... of the museums first. As luck would have it we were about an hour and a half too early. We passed by the brewery just to check it out and could find no indication of such a happy hour. We decided to return home to look it up online and to see if our last museum on the list was open today. On the way home we passed by another news interview in progress. Two different chances to be background celebrities in Warsaw!

Even online we could find no mention of the happy hour. ...

Warsaw - Second Day

Actually had some free time this morning, which is why I've now caught up with this TravelPod stuff. Late morning, off we went to the old town quarter of Warsaw, visiting various sites on the way, including the Warsaw Ghetto plus a very weird statue of Chopin with a tree/hand thing over his head. I would have thought that it'd make more sense sticking a piano in front of him instead, but not being the Polish minister for statues, I don't get much say in these things. I have the bad news ...

... I was really cheap in comparison (as with most of the prices in Warsaw) and HUGE! Even though I discovered the salads and fries were charged for my bill was zt47.90 which is about $16. The schnitzel was very thin which made it look big but good. And the "mixed green salad" had potato, pickled cucumber and red cabbage hidden underneath all the greenery. Yum! Needless to say, the whole dill pickle was one of the first things to be eaten!

I then went past the Old Town ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Holiday Inn Warsaw

    Good hotel!

    from

It might not have the greatest ambience in the world or the most cozy lobby bar but it just works - the rooms comfortable, the reception staff efficient and professional, the location is good etc. These are things you do appreciate when on a business trip, especially after having stayed in some "less great" places in other cities the nights before :-)

Is this hotel really a Holiday Inn?

    from

From the moment the concierge welcomed us to this Warsaw hotel, to our departure three days later, our stay at this hotel was five-star all the way. Courtesy and service were the order of the day - and night. Our rooms were spacious and spotless (and maintained that way) with all the amenities one could ask for - all standard. Prices (52 euros per night for a room for two) were reasonable, including at the bar for coffee and drinks.

One of the best Holiday Inns anywhere

    from

This is definitely one of the best run Holiday Inns you will find. The room was super clean and comfortable and stocked with everything imaginable. The in-room safe is a great convenience too. The location is very close to the horrible station but, unfortunately, the construction site between the hotel and the station makes the hotel feel a bit isolated from the rest of town. But, without asking, the young lady who checked me in offered me a quiet room facing the rear which was very, very nice. The restaurant is good too although a little too formal for my taste. The only complaint I have is the cost of high speed internet access. From the room, it's PLN80 per day (~$25). There's also wi-fi from the lobby and you can buy a scratch card for 2 hours in 2 months usage for PLN19 which is a much better deal. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel.

    So-So

    from

We stayed in this hotel in late April. The hotel is located a little way from the old town, the bus takes about 10mins but we did spend a bit of time waiting on the bus ! It is possible to walk though!

One big minus for us was the large building site across from the hotel. Work on this site started at 6am (including Saturdays) and continued into the evening. The site also meant it was impossible to open the window while we were in our room(which was very stuffy) due to the noise.

On the plus side, the hotel is clean and all you would expect from a Holiday Inn. Breakfast was included in our rate and was excellent.

I would probably stay closer to the old town if I was returning to Warsaw.

    Great place to hang

    from

I can't think of anything to complain about (unusual for me).

    Good hotel

    from

i stayed there from 21-23 january and was very content. good location, friendly staff, nice rooms, very quiet. i didnt had breakfast there, 14 euros is a bit too much for poland. i can recommend the hotel highly.

    Excellent Location

    from

My Friend and I stayed here so we could visit an exhibition at the Palace of Culture and Science (Jan 15-17 2005). The hotel is right next door to this, Warsaw's shopping district and the main bus and train station, but is surprisingly quiet! The Old Town is just a 5 minute bus journey away, making all of Warsaw within easy reach. The hotel room we had was clean, tidy, well decorated with a maid service daily and chocolates for bedtime, we had extra large & extremely comfy single beds as well as tea/coffee facilities, T.V, power shower & bath, hairdryer, air con and a safe, all at no extra cost. This was a 'Standard' Room. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant one evening which was very tasty, reasonably priced and we had a lady playing the piano throughout. The only thing that let this hotel down was the cost of breakfast, 75zl which is around 13 pounds!! in Poland, 13 pounds will get you a three course meal in a very good restaurant! so if its not already included in your room rate, eat breakfast out. However that wouldn't put me off staying there again as the overall experience was comfortable and the staff were extremely pleasant. They also have a luggage room where we left our bags for the day as we checked out at midday and had an evening flight home. A very nice added service! again at no extra cost!

    Good but not brilliant

    from

I slept there four nights in november this year. The hotel is very well located near to the railway station and in the middle of the "western type" hotels and a 10 minutes walk from the theaters and restaurant area. Maybe because my rate was quite high for polish standards don't think it is the best place in town. Rooms are OK but bigger wardrobes will help for long stays. Staff polite. About breakfast, I guess you should be very hungry if you want to really enjoy the 16 Eur you should pay. Afterall it is a good place if you find a cheaper rate.

    Fantastic Hotel & Location

    from

We stayed here at the end of Aug 2004. Hotel was VERY easy to find (just get the #175 bus from the airport to the main train station and the hotel is behind the station).

There was some building work going on between the hotel and the train station, but you could not hear this in the hotel rooms AT ALL. The building will be a new hotel, shopping, restaurant and leisure complex (bowling etc), due to open in 2005.

The hotel staff were fantastic - spoke perfect English - were incredibly helpful and recommended the Warsaw City Tour (120 zloty each) to us which we thoroughtly enjoyed. The best way to get a good flavour of the cityand learn loads of history.

The hotel itself was spotlessly clean. We would return here without a second thought.

    Truly Superb!

    from

Absolutely tremendous place - right next to the train station and Palace of Culture easily accessible to airport by bus. Luxurious interior, superb room, best bed I've ever slept in, opulent bathroom, out of this world breakfasts with massive choice for all tastes. We had the cheapest room rate so the other rooms must be like palaces! Late hotel bar (expensive by Polish standards i.e. UK style prices) we stayed until 2:30am and there were still guests arriving for a drink. Would highly recommend.
