We stayed in a Castle.

... of course) and the Castle is on top of a huge hill (of course). Did I mention the cab was a brand new Mercedes?
At any rate, we got to our wonderful Castle and were hoping for no rain the next day so we could take a boat trip... no such luck. The rain has returned on our trip. Instead, we took the train up to Koblenz. The entire river is littered with castles. Most have them have been converted into hotels it seems. And the towns along the ...

2 Hour Lay Over!

So well I on my way to Bremen I had a 2 hour stop in Koblentz and it was 11 at night. I wish I could say I went and partied hard but I didn't. I tried, I followed some spot lights in the sky but those were to far to walk to so I just walked around a few blocks and found a dinner/bar and had a few ...

Mainz to Koblenz

So on the way to Trier, the train traveled right besides the Rhine River. It was AMAZING! The trip between Mantz and Koblenz was the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. There were boats just traveling up and down the river and plenty of vineyards on the rolling hills along with river. Also every 4 minutes there was another town and a larger church in ...

My feet hurt...seriously

... walking around. So I walked up to the castle on the hill above town. I took a tour and actually enjoyed this castle a lot better than Burg Katz. The view of the Mosel from there was amazing, and there was more to see inside. There was a cool mermaid chandelier in one of the rooms, and the legend was that if you touched its belly and made a wish, it would come true (so I did, of course).

After I walked down from the castle, I decided to ...

3. Boppard – a very pretty city

4. Marksburg Castle – probably the prettiest castle on the Rhine

5. Schloss Stolzenfels & Burg Lahneck – a palace and a castle across the river from each other

6. Ehrenbreitstein Castle – across the river from Koblenz

About halfway through the trip I started to get tired of being on the boat. The hills on each side of ...

Scratch that...the Rhine Valley is my favorite

... down. And there were tree-covered hills rising above both banks of the river.

I went into Bacharach and was amazed at how quaint and medieval it was. It was very small, but so much charm was packed into it I was amazed. It was way better than Rothenburg. And its church was very, very pretty. It was just a basic white with salmon-colored trim inside and out. But it was very beautiful, especially the interior.

The town also had six of its original town ...

Rhine River in Flames

... Rhine river, which usually has a width of 300 - 400 meters, narrows down to 145 meters. In addition, strong currents and dangerous rocks below the surface increase the risk to shipping ever since the Rhine river has been used for shipping. At St. Goars, the Rhine broadens to 250 meters. Still, the valley remains very narrow with high verticle rock faces leaving very little room for ...

Maybe it's because I'm a Koblenzer...

... commuters from Cologne, itself the region’s best known party capital. In contrast to its bigger brother however, Koblenz offers a different atmosphere; serenity takes precedence over spiritedness; nightclubs give way to wine cellars and pool halls, the onus being on the gregarious rather than the grandiose. The town offers a variety of international cuisine too; Argentine, Greek and Indian restaurants sit alongside local eateries. Saving these for later, I opt for a charming ...

Day 9 - German countryside - castles and racecars

... patio. Most of the menu was pasta but we ordered schnitzel to have the German experience. It was enormous with 2 large pieces, fries and salad. We also asked for a dry white wine and ended up with an Italian Sauv. Blanc. So we just gave up on our local experience, but the service was incredible. The server told us he’d graduated business school and was working to help friends and wanted to get into restaurant management. He also ...
