... Into the hallway of the Thiesing residence my suitcases stood awaiting Norbert to take me to the Short-Distance rail only a kilometer from their house by 1pm to take me to the Essen Hbf where the Long- distance ICE arrived at 14:23 to Hannover.

Essen is a buzzing Main station replete with food halls, opportunities for snacks , savoury and sweet as only the Germans can organize. Spotting the Nordsee Seefood Snack bar my stomach made the familiar sounds too ...

After almost missing my train from Herzogenrath to Gladbeck, I was relieved to experience a Regional train which is generally far more crowded with local commuters. It was a joy to be reunited with my cousin Brunhild (from my Mother's side) in the nigh darkness.

Norbert and Brunhild welcomed me to their home and we made plans for the following ...

      All Saints Day

... and an entire block of restaurants and bars. There was a huge park and people flying giant kites along the Rhine. And that was about it. Because everything else was closed. Today we learned that All Saints Day is a national holiday here and not the best day to explore a city. The more you know. Tomorrow we start our road trip! We are picking up the car at the airport and then off to Amsterdam! I'm excited to have a bit more freedom in when we go ...
